(Table Tennis World: How does the training camp leading up to the Asian Games differ from the preparations for major tournaments in the past?
...
Xiao Zhan: There are new changes to the mixed doubles event for the Olympic Games; each association may now be eligible to enter 2 pairs. We are certainly aiming to secure the maximum number of entries, as are other associations. In mixed doubles, most associations tend to pair up their top-ranked male and female players. This presents us with significant challenges and requires a great deal of time and energy. That said, our confidence and determination regarding the mixed doubles event remain as strong as ever.
Ma Lin: I believe we need to move past the traditional notion that singles events are the most important in table tennis; doubles and mixed doubles now demand equal attention. The table tennis program for the Los Angeles Olympics has been restructured: the 6 gold medals are now contested across 5 individual events and 1 mixed team event. In the past, the burden on singles players was much heavier, but that is no longer the case. In fact, doubles and mixed doubles now account for 3 of the 5 individual/doubles events—that’s 60%—while singles events make up only 40%. The same applies to the mixed team event. Furthermore, because the tactical systems for singles and doubles differ, we must place greater emphasis on developing our athletes' doubles and mixed doubles skill sets. We need to assemble the optimal pairings based on the specific events included in the Olympic program.)

(Table Tennis World: What were the key features of this closed training camp for the Asian Games, and how well did you achieve your personal goals?
...
Lin Shidong: This is our second closed training camp of the year. We’ve had such a packed tournament schedule recently that it’s been difficult to find time to focus on building up my foundation.
My play in the last few events felt a bit disorganized, so the main goal for this camp has been to steady myself—to calm down and accumulate progress, step by step. To be honest, I didn’t adapt very well to the venue or the balls when I first arrived, but after over a week of training, I’ve adjusted significantly. As always, the coaches have thrown plenty of challenges my way, helping me simulate the kind of pressure I’ll face from opponents—like playing three or four matches in a single day. This kind of preparation for adversity is exactly what these camps are for; it forces me to constantly think about how to manage my energy and stamina when facing a long, multi-match schedule. Physically, thanks to our conditioning sessions, my injuries are gradually healing, and I’m confident I can get my body into peak condition.
...
Wang Manyu:
I’ve focused primarily on technical aspects, working to strengthen my core assets and overall capabilities. All in all, the training has met my expectations. Midway through, I hit a wall—experiencing both mental and physical fatigue—so I made some necessary adjustments. Looking at the Asian Games schedule, there are many days where I’ll have to play two, or even three, matches. It’s a massive challenge in terms of physical endurance, mental energy, and switching between different events. I need to be prepared to give everything I have in every single match and every single event, so I’m putting in my absolute best effort during this training camp to get fully prepared.
...
Table Tennis World: Is there anything you’d like to say to yourself—or to the fans—ahead of the Asian Games?
...
Lin Shidong: In the team event, I believe that as long as we stay united and pull in the same direction, we can overcome any obstacle.
As for mixed doubles, Kuai Man and I have been partners for a long time; while we’ve played together at the World Championships and various other tournaments, this is our first time competing in a multi-sport Games. I hope we can maintain mutual trust on the court and stay patient, fighting for every single point. In men’s doubles, Huang Youzheng and I have also been partners for over a year. We’re extremely confident—no matter who we face, we aren’t afraid of anyone. The Asian Games in Nagoya will be just as grueling as the World Table Tennis Championships in London; I want to remind myself to draw on the lessons from London and perform well at the Asian Games.
...
Wang Manyu: We will undoubtedly encounter all sorts of challenges at these Asian Games—some we may have faced before, others perhaps entirely new. Our focus must remain on the arena and the match itself, tackling every challenge that arises.
We didn’t reach the semifinals in women’s doubles at the last Asian Games, but this time, we are fully confident in our ability to win. Matches are ever-changing, and since doubles involves two—or even four—people, there are inevitably certain variables. But I want to tell myself: trust in yourself, trust your partner, and trust in the synergy we’ve built together.)
