  1. FS: Two Heavy (100g +) Homemade Blades $30 Each

Der_Echte - What would your ideal blade look like? How would you describe your play-style? I just want to have a sense of what it might be, just in case I stumble upon something that would really suit you well. Things like: Weight? Balance Point? Blade Dimensions? Handle Dimensions? Speed/Class?
  2. FS: Two Heavy (100g +) Homemade Blades $30 Each

That's great! I'm glad it worked out alright for you. :)
  3. Question for Blade-Builders

Thanks! I'm getting more consistent and producing higher quality blades than the first batch. I am so conflicted - they play really nicely and I just can't decide what my favorite blade is, at the moment. They allow me to produce similar speed and spin as my OSP (the koto-koto seems a little...
  4. Question for Blade-Builders

Alright, so even though my Kiri panels are twice as heavy as the balsa panels (they are still like 2x lighter than POC), the blades are coming in at a very reasonable weight! My goal is to keep the handles non-hollowed, as I really like the transfer of the vibration when they are solid. These...
  5. Question for Blade-Builders

Very helpful information, you two! I realize I am quite limited by my current veneer options, and I'm running out of my supply of limba and koto. I've found a good selection of very affordable veneer woods that would satisfy my desire for a much softer medial ply. I am really intrigued by...
  6. Your Blade Journey:

I've been playing for about 15 years and my progression is (heavily resisting the EJ urges along the way): Korbel -> Michael Maze -> OSP (and messing with self-made blades at the moment)
  7. Question for Blade-Builders

Gotchya - that's a lot of different veneers! Do you have a few favorite core woods?
  8. Who are the best makers of custom built blades?

Based on photos and real life experiences, the blade-makers above make some of the best looking, functioning, and consistent blades I've seen. I just started making my own a few weeks ago, and I aspire to create works as consistent and well-made as all of those makers.
  9. Question for Blade-Builders

I've been interested in trying some spruce, which is commonly available around here - I'll check out some of those other options too! Have you ever used Hemlock? I've seen some beautiful specimens for very inexpensive prices (It might be a little heavier than Kiri, Ayous, etc). My next run of...
  10. Question for Blade-Builders

Great - thanks for the suggestions! I am having the hardest time sourcing affordable, manageable portions of ayous/obeche/samba, so for the time being, I'm constrained to using cedars, Kiri, and balsa. I'm just trying to figure how much of a difference it makes when two outer plies like koto and...
  11. Question for Blade-Builders

Alright, so we (I) learned that POC and other cedars may be a bit too heavy for conventional size/shape of blades. I DO have a much thinner POC-core blade I started that would come out to 90g if I put mahogany handles on it; however, I don't think POC is the ideal core and my time is better...
  12. FS: Two Heavy (100g +) Homemade Blades $30 Each

Hi Der_Echte, I thought of you and your legendary love of heavy blades when I posted these - the second one (Mahogany) might be sold, but I think you might really like the first one!
  13. FS: Two Heavy (100g +) Homemade Blades $30 Each

Yeah - cedar was the biggest contributing factor, but they are a little on the large side as well.
  14. FS: Two Heavy (100g +) Homemade Blades $30 Each

Great question! I think it would definitely remove a little weight, but I worry it wouldn't make enough of a difference - I don't think it would affect the balance too much. Thank you! I think I was okay with them being heavy by design (since I used core woods that are heavier than traditional...
  15. FS: Two Heavy (100g +) Homemade Blades $30 Each

SOLD - Homemade Blades Hello, EDIT: Both Blades Have Been Sold - Thanks Everyone (and Especially Der_Echt) I have two blades that I made a couple weeks ago, which I realized are too heavy for me after a session or two of playing with each. Veneers were pressed at high pressure with vacuum bag...
  16. Intro to tensors?

I just came back from a ten year hiatus, and was previously playing with Sriver and Sriver EL...I find Vega Pro to be an excellent upgrade/next gen rubber. Vega Euro is good too, but it's a little too soft for my taste. Rakza 7 is nice as well, but a little harder feeling than I prefer.
  17. Question for Blade-Builders

Great - thanks for the tips! I will get some Paulownia eventually - I'm surprised how expensive it is (although it's reasonable considering the total cost of a blade being less than $15 in materials). I need to make a new template, as I've refined my handle design, but I can't think of the best...
  18. Question for Blade-Builders

Thanks! What would be the consequences of dropping the overall blade thickness down to the 5.3mm range? My core (POC) is so heavy...
  19. Question for Blade-Builders

Mahogany = 20g in total Walnut = 30g in total
  20. Question for Blade-Builders

These blades have been amazing to play with! My current favorite is the 5-ply (koto-koto) with 3/16" balsa core. The 7-ply with 3/32" balsa core has nice control, but relatively slow speed. The 7-ply with Western Red Cedar core is incredibly fast with high throw, but it's too heavy (103g) for...
