Ma Long has been around for a long time, I saw him in 2003 at his first Junior Circuit event in New Zealand. Also, let's not forget Ma Long beat Timo Boll at the age of 16, at the 2005 China Open. Boll was then ranked no.3 in the world. Players like Yan An and Fang Bo were not good enough at 16...
