    why not glue in a piece of wood ? Any wood will do, balsa would be the easiest , i would paint it black with a felt pen then lacquer it a bit

    lead shot is much heavier than rusty nails. Get the smallest balls you can get then you will have filled virtually the whole cavity with solid lead
