Very good observation. His forehand has improved over the years but the most improvement has been from his intense blocks in the middle distance from the table even against power shots from players like FZD. His blocks won him lots of points in a defensive position.

Liu Guoliang also retired at very early age, maybe 24. Top level short-pips play has to rely on pure speed and quick reflex as players have to stay close to the table. These two attributes probably peak at around 24.
