  1. What Made Timo Boll SO GOOD?

That is incorrect information. Timo was in the top10 every year 2008-2014 and top5 each of those years except 12 and 14. Imo it is pretty amazing that he still is top10 because the rule changes should have hurt him as the slow, spinny loop was his biggest asset and that was taken away from...
  2. Which of the 3 big equipment rule changes had the biggest effect?

Weren't pips already on the way out before they were regulated? Since the early 90s most dominant top players besides LGL were playing inverted already, right?
  3. Which of the 3 big equipment rule changes had the biggest effect?

Generally those changes were good for the game, right? Players can hit powerful but still play longer rallies and not tons of return mistakes and 3rd ball kills. If the game is now flat and hard hitting wouldn't that also be an option to use short pips again?
  4. What Made Timo Boll SO GOOD?

Timo never was the best ever but he played in an era were the Chinese made insane efforts to dominate table tennis so it was not possible for Europeans to win. European players have to do school and usually a job later so they can't put in the same effort. Had waldner played in the 2010s he...
  5. Which of the 3 big equipment rule changes had the biggest effect?

In the last 10-15 years there were 3 big equipment rule changes. 1. Ban of speed glue 2. Ball from 38mm to 40mm 3. 40mm ball from celluloid to plastic What were the effects of those and which of the changes had the biggest effect on the game?
  6. Unique style and the long blade handle?

I don't think he gains any advantage from that, since he doesn't hold it in the end like a tennis racket but still up at the blade. Btw why not use such a grip and grip it in the end? Couldn't you generate more power with that? Btw nices serves by that guy. The rest of his game is not good but...
  7. ITTF Reaction to Timo Bolls critics of tuned rackets

Well table tennis does have regulations of equipment. You can't speed glue, use certain pips or two black rubbers. Not allowing boosters is nothing different, as long there is a rule it should be enforced. Maybe table tennis should install a everything goes class were you can use full carbon...
  8. Serve for a lefty

Yeah that makes sense, more practice for the lefty vs righty than vice versa. So back to topic, basically sidespin serves out wide (fast or slow and short?) and occasionally serving down the line fast to change it up? Should the down the line serve have a different spin?
  9. Serve for a lefty

Basically all the lefty tactics also work the same way vice versa for the right, don't they? So that means actually there is no lefty advantage, right? Do you know if the serve hold percentages at the pro level are different in L/R matchups than same handed matchups?
  10. Serve for a lefty

You mean wide into their FH corner?
  11. Serve for a lefty

I'm a lefty player, what serve locations are good for a lefty against a righty? When I watch timo boll he often seems to serve short to the middle of the table. What is the purpose of that?
  12. Changing from Penhold to Shakehand

Didn't he retire long before the RPB came into the scene?
  13. Changing from Penhold to Shakehand

Regarding early RPB. Saw this oldies match between Jiang Jialiang and persson Is that a RPB about 14 seconds into the video? If yes did he learn it later or did he already use it in the 80s?
  14. Watching pros makes you better, and we should watch women players

Most attractive I think are longer fast topspin exchanges away from the table. They happen more in the mens game but there are also many quick kills or errors which are not good to watch. Women are more longer rallies then men probably which is good but you rarely see those spectacular kreanga...
  15. What would a championship winning penholder have to be like today?

Rbp is better but also at passive play against power shots to the BH? He zhi wen could block gard shots pretty easy with his bh while staying close to the table. Why not use classic in passive play and rpb for attacking?
  16. What would a championship winning penholder have to be like today?

Regarding wang hao I think it was mostly mental collapses and at times also getting a little fat that kept him from succeeding. He was a big favourite against ryu and choked.
  17. What would a championship winning penholder have to be like today?

Wouldn't be the classic penhold counterhit/block be almost better to deal with attacks to the backhand? Some old school penholders were pretty good at blocking the ball back fast with the traditional backhand
  18. What would a championship winning penholder have to be like today?

There was some discussion in the other thread but I think there could be a separate thread. I think xx is good but he plays so far off the table and has no backhand. -First trait obviously would be a dominant FH like XX or ma lin. With all the penhold backhand advancements a penholder needs a...
  19. Watching pros makes you better, and we should watch women players

Btw was it a smart strategy by the guys to use power loops right away? At first she struggled with the pace but then she adjusted and redirected the pace. Wouldn't it have been smarter to start with soft loops so she couldn't generate pace with her short strokes and then attack later?
  20. Watching pros makes you better, and we should watch women players

Found this too. In both matches she initially struggled with the power loops but then she adjusted with her blocks (is that a block or a counter hit she uses on her bh most of the time - very short motion). Of course the two weren't very top pros (or in blascyks case not anymore at this time)...
