  1. Is any current top player better than prime Ma Long (2015-2017)?

Okay, if you want to win on language, feel free to do so. But if you think that ZJK's technique would have made him equally injury free with the current balls, okay, I disagree. Nothing annoys me more than someone taking a very narrow view of what someone else is saying when the substantive...
  2. Is any current top player better than prime Ma Long (2015-2017)?

There are nuances to this. First of all, that was the "poly ball", which is not quite the ABS ball. Secondly, this was the beginning/continuation of many years over which ZJK would have injuries, whether it was the ball, or just congenital issues with his body, I leave to anyone to guess. But...
  3. Is any current top player better than prime Ma Long (2015-2017)?

Do you seriously think the 40+ ball we use today is the same generally as the 40mm ball that was used before 2014 and after 2000? Whether it is the size or the ABS material, this new ball just doesn't play the same.
  4. Is any current top player better than prime Ma Long (2015-2017)?

I wasn't speaking about ML per se, but again, if you watch ML vs Wang Hao or ML vs Zhang Jike encounters with the old ball, ML wasn't that spectacular even with his good backhand. First strike with heavy spin with the older balls were more devastating and defence was not as easy. I am just...
  5. Is any current top player better than prime Ma Long (2015-2017)?

I think the plastic ball actually made it easier to dominate with that style though there are tradeoffs. By reducing the spin dimension, it made lots of backhands that were inadequate in fast attack mode with the older balls far more serviceable because the blocking and countering dimension...
  6. Is any current top player better than prime Ma Long (2015-2017)?

IMHO, ZJK required the smaller ball, his game style wouldn't have survived the larger ball without injury because his forehand didn't have the stable base with the lower body that makes Ma Long and Fan so impressive. His wrist usage is much more active, definitely more spin oriented than Ma Long.
  7. WTT Finals Men and Women Fukuoka 2024, 11/20-24

    Someone needs to combine threads.
  8. Why it is hard for umpires to call hidden serves

So when I tell people to suck it up in the US, it is because very often in the US, when this stuff haopens in a tournament: 1. There is no guarantee that the umpire will save you because he might be busy with another match or just might not even agree with your assessment as consistently as you...
  9. Daily Table Tennis Chit Chat

Had an interesting weekend. I played a local event, U2150 and Open. In the U2150, I was the B player in my group. Thr A player came late so I played the D player first, a guy with pips whose game I was familiar with from friendly matches. Then the C player played the D player and won as...
  10. Why it is hard for umpires to call hidden serves

It's to hide both, both are important. The whole picture contains information, knowing how the racket is travelling into the ball is perfect information, but hiding the ball by definition makes the contact hard to discern. You want go take a mental picture of how the ball was contacted
  11. Why it is hard for umpires to call hidden serves

The angle of the throw is partly what creates the hidden serve (throwing it backwards to a point of invisibility). And there are other things about throwing the ball into the racket but that's not the point. The problem with non vertical tosses is that the forward momentum of the ball from the...
  12. Why it is hard for umpires to call hidden serves

I have seem way more than that, but again, it goes to skill level.
  13. Why it is hard for umpires to call hidden serves

The other point is the skill level of the hidden serves and the follow up of the opponent. Some players don't take major advantage of the hiding and their serves are what they are. But some players actually do make serves that are incredibly difficult to read from the bounce trajectory (good...
  14. World Cup 2024

Xiao Zhan virtually injured her with his overworking training regiment. She is doing well with Ma Lin and should stay with him
  15. World Cup 2024

He flipped his paddle to play Liang as well. It is good to bet with house money.
  16. World Cup 2024

Yeah but this backhand serve was a backhand sidespin serve into the lefty short forehand. Which was doing exactly what his reverse serve did but with more control and faster backhand recovery. You don't lose 3‐1, 6-2 up with a history of choking and escape the label because it happened against...
  17. World Cup 2024

The best match I have seen between them remains the ancient wjttc final lol. Their destinies still remain entangled IMHO and I wouldn't be surprised if Wang won the Olympic gold.
  18. World Cup 2024

They got a massive event done on two tables. As crappy as the round robin rules were on ties, they deserve some credit.
  19. World Cup 2024

Playing a player with injured form is much harder for pros who are used to the player than you realize because many of the signals you use to read the ball don't show up. But I would like to believe that Lin got more and more nervous as the match went on and couldn't even think objectively...
  20. World Cup 2024

They probably saw Harimoto play Lin Gaoyuan and decided it wasn't worth the match.
