This is kind of out there, but Yinhe Moon 12 Blue? It's fairly soft, not really thats spin sensitive, catapult is on the low side and spin is average compared to some of the other rubbers mentioned here. It's also super cheap, so trying wouldn't break the bank.

Sorry, haven't read all the replies. But based on the first couple of posts, I would go for a 7 ply all wood blade. Something like Yinhe Pro-537 (I'm biased, as I'm using this). But basically just something without carbon, but faster than a 5 ply. A Clipper like, if you want.

I know you just mentioned not been a fan of chinese. But to me, Yinhe Mercury II is IMO the best rubber for what you are asking. The sponge is weird, in the sense that it's bouncy, but not to fast. And it does have a lot of spin.

Personally I would avoid recomending pips to new players. And regarding the chinese rubbers, I would go only for the easy ones (kind of like, yinhe mercury) for players like him. Not really the most common scenario for someone that's been playing for 2 years with what's probably a hardbat at...
