  1. My Forehand technique - critique

I don't doubt it: whatever I've shown in terms of games is, well, terrible. Terribly outdated for one. I have a ton of self hitting, but I understand that it's really not exactly the same thing, and even if you can see A LOT of progress there, it's not worth much. All bark no bite. Now, I'd...
  2. Reducing Spin on Your Serves

David, you see, the point is that you can disguise your serve well enough that they won't go "Aha, a no-spin serve, what a dummy!". It'll miss the point entirely if you tell them that you're serving an easy ball. I'm not doubting your level of play at all, but if you can't really disguise...
  3. Reducing Spin on Your Serves

Wow. I do this against much lower players, just to give them something that looks easy because it's slow, and most of the time they're kinda high too, but they always get netted. Even if they're very light. I honestly always expect a pretty strong return. I thought it was just low skill players...
  4. Daily Table Tennis Chit Chat

@OldSchoolPenholder I wouldn't really use a pendulum motion for fast no-spin serves. I'd do something like this, and change it at the very last moment: they won't see it before they see the ball anyway. EDIT: Oops! Posted this in the wrong thread: tabbed in to the wrong one. Well, I think you...
  5. Daily Table Tennis Chit Chat

Well, not even the best server can make a no-spin ball look heavy. For obvious reasons. I guess what I'm saying is kinda redundant: because whatever effect I'm describing will come about just from the deceptive serve motion.
  6. Daily Table Tennis Chit Chat

This is what I mean with being sure that it's heavy. Misreading it and playing a shot that is suited for heavy spin, because you believed it was heavy spin. Only to find out later that it was indeed not, and because you're now observing it more objectively and from 3rd person, it looks...
  7. Daily Table Tennis Chit Chat

When you say light spin, do you mean serves that come back towards the net, or stop, but they don't really launch themselves back like heavy backspin does? When you say no-spin, do you mean the serves that just kinda roll softly?
  8. Reducing Spin on Your Serves

It's actually quite hard to serve a good no-spin and make the motion look like it's not. Anyone can serve no-spin, and it's the killer serve at below 1000 USATT level. They're DAMN good at serving no-spin down there. However I think you can see the issue.
  9. Daily Table Tennis Chit Chat

NL, it's all in their head, isn't it? Tell me, have you ever looked back at video footage of yourself popping up a serve that you were sure was heavy, but it's clearly not heavy on the video? That's what I mean with "looking heavy". It's all in their head... Won't this just end up in them...
  10. Daily Table Tennis Chit Chat

I think the real hard part is serving short no-spin and making it look heavy until it's too late and you're already ready to unload on the pop-up.
  11. Reducing Spin on Your Serves

Now we wait for the beginner crowd to chime in and ask why the hell someone would want to serve light spin. Wait a minute, I'm most likely to be in said beginner crowd.
  12. Daily Table Tennis Chit Chat

I'm no expert, but if I try to get spin, I focus on accelerating the racket rapidly and contacting on the "forward" part, or to your left for a right hander serving with the forehand. If I try to produce light spin, I focus on keeping a more constant, perhaps slower speed, and I try to contact...
  13. TT pet peeves?

I believe that Ross was talking more in a meta-sense when he referred to "what others are doing". Although I understand what you mean: you can't indeed just ignore your opponent in TT.
  14. My Training Video

    Fantastic serve-attack at 4 minutes.
  15. Daily Table Tennis Chit Chat

I'd like to see that. The backhands he did in the warmup reminded me of NL's backhand. So I figured he was around 2000's.
  16. My Forehand technique - critique

Our level being generally pretty much everyone under the high 1000's and low 2000's. OP is probably a level or two higher than I am in everything except serves. Oh yeah, I forgot to ask: @UpSideDownCarl What do you think about my thoughts on learning to vary spin? Is it over my head or over...
  17. Daily Table Tennis Chit Chat

Shuki, I gotta hand it to your partner, he's unleashing a can of whoop ass on you, especially on the serves! Your technique looks better but he has some of that touch. Love his backhand serves. I could just be skipping to all of the wrong points, though.
  18. Question on Biomechanics of the FH Loop

Boogar, what do you mean it's difficult to rotate your body without leaning back? I can't really picture what exactly you think is correct. Why do you need to lean backwards? Is your arm moving too far in front of you?
  19. My Forehand technique - critique

If you want to get the ball past people to end points, why don't you just start incorporating sidespin shots into your game? I think you have enough power to get the ball past people who are your level or below. It's not like your shots are slow. Why not learn to adapt your forehand better and...
  20. Help! How to coach a complete newbie?

Oh yes, I realized. Thanks, Der_! However, I've been reading Hodges' blog for as long as I've been playing, it's one of the very first things I found on the internet regarding table tennis. So, I can technically say I've been reading it for "years". ;)
