I can see this technique working with light underspin. If it's heavy underspin you will dump it into the net since the push won't be high or strong enough to lift the underspin.

Well a sealed wood handle is better than splinters. I've sealed all my blades and have no issues with the feel. I just don't like the stains from sweat when it gets absorbed.

From what I've seen so far the umps are pretty liberal with the illegal serves. Lot's of tosses that are horizontal and low.
