Beyond specific advice, a general rule that has worked for me is the desire to adapt. As a rule, if it sucks for you, it sucks for the opponent too, so it usually comes down to who adapts better to it.

The thing is that with the new ball, long pips are easier to use on all kinds of blades including offensive ones. And you could always play an offensive style with pips, it all depends on the pips and your practice time. That said, most of the value with pips is 1) if it fits your playing...
