  1. Does Ma Long have an old school style?

Cai Zhenhua was a shakehander. But you really mean two winfed looper and while there were a few others who didnt win WTTC, yes, KLH and WLQ were leaders of a new school.
  2. Butterfly Michael Maze ALC vs Hurricane Long V

You just want her to get a flexier blade. Garaydia is very stiff. It might sound crazy to you but for me, Viscaria and ZJK are too stiff. I keep hoping it will change so I hope I will be wrong some day.
  3. Butterfly Michael Maze ALC vs Hurricane Long V

Well, soft hands is not as critical as proper hitting or blocking technique but both can go together especially if the player holds the bat too tightly in general (I like to believe that my hands are always soft). So yes, try to replace the stuff she currently does with proper blocking...
  4. Does Ma Long have an old school style?

It might sound funny but I never thought of KLH as a forehand dominant player.
  5. Attacking against long pimples

It is addressed to the level of player who is asking about the problem. You are asking why everyone doesn't do it which is a different question with a different answer.
  6. Does Ma Long have an old school style?

It all depends on how you define old school, but it seems that yes, Ma Long is more forehand dominant in his overall play than ZJK or FZD, and is also more likely to push more balls back than FZD (ZJK not so much), but is diverse enough to play almost any style.
  7. Butterfly Michael Maze ALC vs Hurricane Long V

Practicing blocking is not as easy as it sounds. Many people thinknthry know how to block but they really don't. You have to work on eliminating the urge to spin and keep her from lifting the ball. In other words, she has to hit the ball relatively flat with her counterhit. It's...
  8. Butterfly Michael Maze ALC vs Hurricane Long V

The thing is that too many people learn to topspin without learning to block. It is possible but difficult to develop a close to the table topspin without a proper understanding of a close to the table block. She doesn't know how to play a forward topspin and she probably thinks it is a good...
  9. Butterfly Michael Maze ALC vs Hurricane Long V

The thing is this - I understand what ttmonster is trying to do and there is no guarantee it will work, though it can. As a coach and a player, these are experiments that I consistently do and find helpful because they open my eyes to aspects of my game that I usually like to ignore and I can...
  10. Butterfly Michael Maze ALC vs Hurricane Long V

I used to believe that carbon blades have larger sweetspots but it is not true. What really happens is that stiffer blades do not vibrate as much when you miss the sweetspot and there is a consistently higher rebound in most carbon blades. That said, if you don't learn to hit the true sweets...
  11. Butterfly Michael Maze ALC vs Hurricane Long V

This is going to be interesting. Let me know how it goes. I think the Viscaria is likely to be a mistake as Koto is a hard outer ply to feel unless you have good contact depth and Hinoki is 95% about the feeling. She definitely won't feel more spin with a Viscaria even if she gets it. The...
  12. Changing from Penhold to Shakehand

Last major thing I got from a high level coach. The backhand loop as an opening shot is mostly good vs shots which are regular and predictable. While you can train your backhand to improve against shots that are hard to time, the limited range of the backhand will never let it replace a...
  13. Changing from Penhold to Shakehand

The biggest thing is that you will have many more role models and people to follow. My biggest role models for backhand play with my current strokes are this guy (for obvious reasons given my height and the fact that I don't grip switch) and Kreanga. All of this guy's technique are a beauty to...
  14. Ultimate Table Tennis League 2017

Given how he played at the Australian Open, he can't have big upsets anymore unless he beats someone in the top 10.
  15. Attacking against long pimples

The only thing I will add to this is that you should either practice with someone above your level or play matches with someone of your level or even better below. This is just to start. As you understand and watch better, you can play anyone. If you play matches against someone at a higher...
  16. Daily Table Tennis Chit Chat

Been in Rome for the past few days so no table tennis. It will be interesting when I return because I think my technique was becoming more physical before I left. In any case, life is going to be interesting.

All sports where you need to accelerate rackets the arm or hand over a short distance rely on whip mechanics. If you watch any advanced TT player and don't feel toy are watching a master class in whip mechanics, then you either don't have the eyes or the player is not as advanced as you think...
  18. Changing from Penhold to Shakehand

I almost never grip switch. The only thing I do is cock my wrist back slightly on all backhand strokes. However, my finger and thumb need to be on the blade face and doing most of the grip work with the middle finger as a supporter so I can make all angle adjustments with this grip. I will...
  19. Changing from Penhold to Shakehand

Pricey, the backhand loop is my favorite stroke and is a stroke I understand comprehensively. In fact, once of the things I have realised as I have become more advanced is that it is possible to have very similar forehand and backhand motions and in fact , one of the reasons my backhand is good...
