SchemeSC, don't start the stroke low vs topspin but from where I sit, that looks right. One of the keys to that stroke is that if the timing is right, you can swing pretty hard into the ball and still spin it because you are hitting it off center just by the nature of the stroke. You do have...

It's one way but not the only way. The contact point and swing trajectory can be achieved in a variety of ways. It's just that if you want to deal with heavy spin close to the table, you will just be frustrated by hitting balls long. Asgarali used to do what you are suggesting BTW. But as...

Because I want options when dealing with spin and counterspin usually let's you hit the ball harder with more consistency than counterhit. It's just harder. I already counter hit but you learn the really brain changing stuff when you counterspin.

I haven't given a TTD update in a while but I have maintained my same project which is the never ending goal and dream of being able to counter loops at the table with my own loops. I can do it but I surprise myself when I do it and that is not good enough. I don't surprise myself when I loop...

Boogar, do my eyes deceive me or are you kinda using the grip I showed you when you were here?

The idea of extra pinch at impact is something that you will naturally do if you are trying to make a whip pattern as you can't crack the whip without tightening the grip when you snap the forearm with a loose grip. For me the tightening is something that I don't think hard about and I just...

Ah, that helps explain why find this kind of stuff fascinating - you don't seem to have ever had a conversation with a higher level player about table tennis. Is your 2000 level estimate of your play from tournaments or is it from casual play?

I definitely agree - I have grips that mean I can play forehands with minimal body rotation but make my backhand feel bad. And the reverse of course, The grip I use now makes my backhand feel natural, but makes me more likely to play hooking loops with my forehand if I am rushed or just...

His tips are hardly doubtful, but are definitely not for beginners unless you consider a 2000 level player like yourself to be a beginner - anyone who has followed table tennis to some degree has heard something like them in one context or another. THe first time I started seriously messing...

Sometimes, you have to bite the bullet, see what rubbers the other guy is using, buy your own sheet and see what it does. You may have tried that already but just a reminder. For the lefty, you might try playing the TTEdge app. The serves at the very least might be helpful.

I know exactly what you mean when you say you want to protect your privacy. That said, it is unfair not to either provide an estimate of your playing level or the level at which you coach or your number of years teaching/coaching etc. From what you have written, it doesn't sound like you have...

I get the logic, in practice, it depends on how heavy the chop is and how long it is as well as what the chopper does well. I think looping light backspin is easier than pushing it, but not everyone agrees, and it still depends on the chopper.

I wouldn't have brought it up if he wasn't misreading the ball. You can do anything when you know what is on the ball and have the right stroke, but this was someone he could have beaten with his regular loop, no point in taking risks on such balls.

To his credit, he has adjusted to a few of the criticisms made of him. A lot of it sounds good but a lot of it misses the point IMO. To be fair, I was taught using a different paradigm that I think is more practically insightful than the detailed method he is using to analyze the issue.

So I finished the match and I see and understand your frustration, but to be honest, you may be putting too much emphasis on your mental game and not enough on your ball quality. I think there is something to be said for the chopper or the fact that he was a chopper took you out of your comfort...

A couple of things - the contact point does not necessarily mean sidespin is the dominant spin. It's my dominant contact point and I mostly loop topspin with a hint of sidespin to remain safe when looping heavy spin. The stroke looks decent but a lot of the classical whip elements are missing...

I am watching the match and have just arrived at the 1-1 gsme score point in the match. You need to train with pips players much more, especially those that twiddle. If you can, get your coach to block with pips and let you loop for 5 to 10 minutes in every training. If the ball comes short...

Coming from a lefty, that sounds self serving. A player can be both unfamiliar and a lefty.
