  1. 27th ITTF-Asian Table Tennis Championships 2024, Astana, 10/7-13

How did Odo earn her spot? /s A big downgrade from my previous projection.
  2. 27th ITTF-Asian Table Tennis Championships 2024, Astana, 10/7-13

Ever since Ishikawa grabbing the ball that was still in play (hit the net assembly and landed) at Asian Olympic Qualifications for Rio 2016, nothing surprises me.

  4. 27th ITTF-Asian Table Tennis Championships 2024, Astana, 10/7-13

Count the number of times CHN was the XYZ teams below. Another one for WT: At WTTC 2008, CHN was the XYZ team, where it dropped the 1st match to SGP. For MT: At WTTC 2024, CHN was the XYZ team, where it dropped the 1st and 3rd matches to KOR. At WTTC 2006, CHN was the XYZ team, where it...
  5. 27th ITTF-Asian Table Tennis Championships 2024, Astana, 10/7-13

And the XYZ team lost. Hayata played as X at WTTC 2024 and said she couldn't transition to the 4th match against SYS in time after upsetting CM, admitting being mentally prepared for 2 matches will be necessary in the future.
  6. 27th ITTF-Asian Table Tennis Championships 2024, Astana, 10/7-13

Two more instances below where CHN was the XYZ team. The order of play would've affected the outcome, therefore, 2 of those 2-3 in this case could've gone the other way in the other case and it's not as simple as flipping the order around and calling it a day. The last time CHN lost as the ABC...
  7. 27th ITTF-Asian Table Tennis Championships 2024, Astana, 10/7-13

I wonder why I couldn't find this the last time. TWC 2018 was used to study the choices of ABC/XYZ teams. The team winning the toss picked ABC team 100% in stage 1 and there were 4 times XYZ team was picked in stage 2. Twice for JPN, and once for HKG and FRA and the reasons were interesting...
  8. 27th ITTF-Asian Table Tennis Championships 2024, Astana, 10/7-13

ABC vs XYZ A vs Y B vs X C vs Z A vs X B vs Y Note that ABC is more balanced than XYZ. A and B both have 2 matches before their next match. X has only 1 and Y has 3. ABC has more room for error for both A and B. XYZ not so much, where X has less time to recover, win or lose, and whatever...
  9. 27th ITTF-Asian Table Tennis Championships 2024, Astana, 10/7-13

Give any underdog team the chance to choose and it's gonna be 100% ABC team unless they don't want to win. That's how SGP beat CHN at WTTC 2010. I've had enough experience playing local team tournaments since I was a kid. No one would pick XYZ team when given the choice.
  10. 27th ITTF-Asian Table Tennis Championships 2024, Astana, 10/7-13

A great opportunity to prove her Olympic gold.
  11. 27th ITTF-Asian Table Tennis Championships 2024, Astana, 10/7-13

PSG plays more or less the ideal game when it counts - putting the ball on the table. That requires a ton of self-control. If only Hayata has half of that... With that, she beat DHK 4-1, Mittelham 0-2 -> 4-3, Diaz 0-3 -> 4-3 and broke Hayata's playing hand on the way to losing 1-3 -> 3-4...
  12. 27th ITTF-Asian Table Tennis Championships 2024, Astana, 10/7-13

CHN saved by the toss. XYZ team is hard to overcome for the underdog. If JPN doesn't get at least 1 point and two 2-3, then PRK will be pronounced the silver medalist.
  13. 27th ITTF-Asian Table Tennis Championships 2024, Astana, 10/7-13

Think of Hirano and Miwa. SYS has been playing non-stop. Attended public events in Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China after Paris 2024. Never took a proper break and then headed for WTT CS Macao 2024 and China Smash 2024.
  14. 27th ITTF-Asian Table Tennis Championships 2024, Astana, 10/7-13

How did Hirano come back from 0-2 at WTT CT Taiyuan 2024? Hirano: 7:1 Pyon Song Gyong: 11:2
  15. 27th ITTF-Asian Table Tennis Championships 2024, Astana, 10/7-13

She earned that silver medal. Ri Jong Sik is a little surprising.
