Not over dramatizing at all. Look at how Matilda Ekholm for example was not sent to the Olympic games in 2012 when she qualified because she didn't have a chance at a medal - she went in 2016 because Sweden qualified as a team and had an outside chance at a team medal. Or look at how Germany...

It happens in gymnastics too and a few other events. Olympic budgets of many countries are determined by their probability of winning a medal. If fewer countries consider table tennis a viable sport to send and prepare athletes for, it loses its popularity as an Olympic sport. Unfortunate but...

It was much worse under the old system. So I think you would agree that reducing that incentive is a move is the right direction. So you can disagree with me but if you really understood, you would see that in that particular regard the new system.is better.

Hmmm... This is a lot of change... sounds very suspicious because I can see the bias... Yeah... ITTF has a lot at stake here... I hope what they are trying to do works but it is a bit fishy...

Check out my last post and see if you get it. If not, I truly give up. What you don't realize is that he could play 7. You can't hurt yourself by playing more unless it results in injury.
  6. Ittf stupiiiiiiiiiid ranking

I give up. The point is that you can play any number of events you want but only the best 8 results get used to calculate your ranking. So if he had played 10 in the past year, the ranking only includes the best 8. He has to play at least 8. He can have 10 and have 2 bad events. If he has...
  7. Ittf stupiiiiiiiiiid ranking

If he played it likely wouldn't affect his ranking either. This seems hard to get across. Maybe rainneverever can explain since you seem to get her but not me.
  8. Ittf stupiiiiiiiiiid ranking

Some of what they are doing may not be as accidental as it seems but the change was announced in 2016 and rankings were declared back then so people could adjust and track results. I don't think the current system is perfect. But I think that aspects of it are largely in the right direction.

Then he isn't hurting his ranking because it would be a fat 0 and not the Hungary Open. Just like Ma Long has a fat zero and no eighth event at the current time. Try again.
  10. Ittf stupiiiiiiiiiid ranking

I might have said this elsewhere but having 15 year olds on the tour should not be the priority of the ITTF. In fact, Some of this is what hurts the professionalism in our sport where many rich kids play the sport for a while and get gaudy rankings, then go to college and leave the sport...
  11. Ittf stupiiiiiiiiiid ranking

Only if there wasn't another event with a better result to replace it. Try again.
  12. Ittf stupiiiiiiiiiid ranking

They bring solid points without deferring to the fact that things evolve. The ITTF will have to make changes over time in response to the details of the new system.
  13. Ittf stupiiiiiiiiiid ranking

Lol. They pick the last 8 best results so it had nothing to do with losing his spot. Do better.
  14. Ittf stupiiiiiiiiiid ranking

Yeah. Gasp. She actually has to play regularly to maintain her international ranking. What a shame... Maybe more people should have been in America in 2016 to see what the withdrawals of CNT did to the event. Maybe they will appreciate how I feel a tad bit more. This change may not...
  15. Ittf stupiiiiiiiiiid ranking

You are confusing the difference between being #1 and #2 with the difference between being #1 and #7. With the old system Ma Long only had to regain bonus points and he kept his rating. Now he has to play and win many events. He can no longer maintain high ranking in a cherry picked schedule...
  16. Ittf stupiiiiiiiiiid ranking

Entirely reasonable and graceful. There are many events in the year, all you are required to play is 8 to have a full ranking. Only a few Japanese players play every event. At least he played the World Tour Finals, where was Ma Long?
  17. Ittf stupiiiiiiiiiid ranking

Ad hominem is a part of life when understanding why people do what they do and when making value judgements about situations where values are at stake not just numbers. If I was saying people are wrong because they want Ma Long to be #1, that is one thing. But saying that people are motivated...
  18. Ittf stupiiiiiiiiiid ranking

I think this is likely true as well though I am not sure why you consider "foreigner" an appropriate word. But performance would have had Dima at least top 3. His 2017 performance was stellar. It rivals that of Xu Xin in some of his good years. The other thing to realize is that the changes...
  19. Ittf stupiiiiiiiiiid ranking

Yeah and he is unlikely to be #1 for a while now so you can be patient. Watch some old WTTC videos of the final.
  20. Ittf stupiiiiiiiiiid ranking

It happens in just about every sport. It even happens in regular tournaments when the round robin stage has an upset.
