  1. Slower, soft rubber a good idea for a beginner?

I agree with this - the reason why Baracuda has issues is that for a first rubber, it is very spinny and spin-sensitive and inherently non-linear. But it is not the end of the world. The speed is actually good for a beginner, though the strokes that may work may be less technically sound...
  2. I like underspin coming at me than nospin , is that normal ?

Well try it out and see what happens. Since you don't have video, it is hard to recommend anything. THe starting position looks similar because he is very low, but it is different contact point on the ball and it is different to him as well. IF you are as low as him, the starting points will...
  3. Slower, soft rubber a good idea for a beginner?

Both the rubbers and the blade have issues, but if I had to pick one over the other, the rubbers are fine, the blade is the issue.
  4. Drive looping back spin balls.

It's not that hard. The confusion here and the reason it is "hard" is that most intermediate player are not used to taking anything off the bounce especially backspin. But once you realize it is an off the bounce shot, the most important thing is to get to the ball on time and then the spin...
  5. Drive looping back spin balls.

I use the shot. You perfectly described what your friend does. It is basically an of the bounce loop/loop drive vs backspin. Most Chinese/Euro off the bounce loops hook in that fashion. Just try it and you will find the balance. I do it more with my backhand than my forehand.
  6. Daily Table Tennis Chit Chat

Start with wrong gluing (bad glue job). Reglue and make sure the contact is correct after you glue. Glue must dry and bond properly.
  7. Daily Table Tennis Chit Chat

Not the right thread but I am trying to test ALC Koto blades (yes the ones I am allergic to) especially the Timo Boll ALC or Timo Boll Spirit. If you have a cheap one for sale or for trade, please reach out. Haven't played in a while but I want to raise the speed of my setup by reducing the...
  8. New Tenergy Rubbers! Tenergy 05N and Tenergy 09C

I think the 05N will just have a harder sponge, something that amateurs have wanted access to for a longer time.

  10. Service Advice

I would be the last person to say that one should not develop quality serve spin. It's hard to serve any serve perfect all the time under match pressure. My point is that if he is having issues with how higher level players treat his serves, he should start with the ball depth, height and...
  11. Service Advice

Well, we can't see his serves but your spin doesn't have to be heavy for the serve to be what it is not. I know many good players whose actual serve spin is not ridiculously impressive. They just used good placement and deception and play behind the serve well. Spin is very important but it...
  12. Incorrect Service

Since I am not a pro and I am not trying to hide my serves and I have this problem, let me offer a different explanation. The optimal contact point for a serve is over the right hip close to the body. It is a golden triangle of sorts for your serve swings, especially if you are doing...
  13. Service Advice

Without seeing video, what I will say is that it is unlikely to be purely about spin as spin is one dimension of serve quality but not the most important. One of my favorite video series is the one by Jim Clegg where he discusses how a serve fits into your game. Then the quality of the...

  17. Are styles conforming and hurting the sport?

Exhibit A. Can you imagine a harder WTTC semifinal to watch since this one?
  18. Who has the world's best backhand?

Oh, I was talking about players still playing today obviously. And Ma Long has done some work to make a credible claim for his current backhand to be on the list. But right now, I have a love affair with Lin Gaoyuan's backhand. Special stuff.
