Apologies for the late post. This is how the matches ended.

Dachau vs Berlin 2-6

Winter/Pranjkovic vs Surjan/Neumann 1-3
Byun/Itagaki vs Kaneyoshi/Griesel 3-1
Byun vs Surjan 3-0
Winter vs Kaneyoshi 2-3
Itagaki vs Neumann 0-3
Ho vs Griesel 1-3
Byun vs Kaneyoshi 0-3
Winter vs Surjan 2-3
Itagaki vs Griesel
Ho vs Neumann

Disappointing result for Dachau. Surjan has been injured since the world champs and forfeited both matches against Byun in the semi-finals. Why Berlin with the biggest roster of all teams didn't let someone else play is beyond me. Pranjkovic played only doubles in the re-match. Winter who beat Kaneyoshi 3-0 on Friday lost this time in the decider. Unfortunately no stream to see how she lost that match. The lower pair without a loss again and since a draw was already enough for Berlin to advance to the finals Winter forfeited her match against Surjan after winning the first two games 16-14 and 16-14.

Weinheim vs Weil 6-4

Chien/Wan vs Hursey/Riliskyte 3-0
Harac/Jeger vs Ortega/Lachenmayer 3-2
Chien vs Sozoniuk 3-0
Wan vs Hursey 0-3
Harac vs Riliskyte 3-2
Jeger vs Ortega 2-3
Chien vs Hursey 0-3
Wan vs Sozoniuk 3-2
Harac vs Ortega 2-3
Jeger vs Riliskyte 3-1

I was there live and it turned out to be a very close match. Weinheim was off to a good start winning both doubles. Chien had no problems with Sozoniuk, but Wan despite her efforts and a 2-3 loss on Friday had no chance against Hursey. She is pretty crazy live, so fast and deadly on both wings. Jeger lost in the decider against Ortega who I felt was very passive. Both play pips on their backhand, but Jeger was basically always the one who initiated the attack, backhand or forehand. She ended up struggling on the open-up with her backhand against the backhand pushes and seemed confused about it. I think she played too upward instead of pressing it a bit down. By now Weinheim was 4-1 ahead and only needed another point for the finals. Both leading women were next and despite the end result it was a close match. Hursey is really impressive, but Chien returned all her shots with interest. It was the most exciting match to watch. So many high intensity rallies. Chien won on Friday in the decider, but lost now without winning a game even though game 2 and 3 went to 12-14. She was so frustrated she vented in Chinese when she took the timeout in the third game and smacked the ball earlier in the match. Sozoniuk looked like she had the upper hand and was going to win 3-0, but Wan pulled off a big comeback winning in the decider and securing the finals. Harac also seemed to be able to win 3-0, but ended up losing in the decider against Ortega. She is a very high risk player when it comes to her quality and sometimes tries to play harder than she needs to. Jeger wanted redemption for her loss against Ortega and beat Riliskyte relatively comfortably 3-1.
Also, small correction from me. I said previously Chien hadn't lost a match yet, but she did lose a match against Kaneyoshi from Berlin and sits at 12-2 now including play-offs. Pretty good first season.

Weinheim will face for the third year in a row Berlin in the finals. The dates are June 27 (in Berlin) and June 29 (in Weinheim).

Kaneyoshi will turn 19 this November. Something probably went wrong with Winter's body during their rematch.

It´s really unusual for her to lose against defence. Kaneyoshi changed her tactics slightly, but Sabine missed a lot of shots that she normally wouldn´t.
Body or head (pressure?), "something wrong" seems to have been the case. ;-)

The play-offs final starts tomorrow with the first match in Berlin at 6.30PM German time against Weinheim. Nina and Shan aren't allowed to play so this is Weinheim's best chance yet at their third attempt to win the German title, but Berlin's young players proved themselves in winning the Champions League title recently.

Table 1
Table 2

Berlin will also stream the re-match in Weinheim on Sunday so expect better quality. It's very hot at the moment in Germany and Weinheim plays in a school gym with no AC. I'm not looking forward to the hell that gym is during the summer and I'm not envying the players. Hopefully Berlin has AC in their venue.

In other news here are the transfers I could find for the next season:

ttc berlin eastside
– Natalia Bajor, Liu Weishan (probably Champions League only like He Zhuojia last season)
SV DJK Kolbermoor – Huang Yu-Chiao, Tijana Jokic, Lee Yunji, Lisa Wang
TTC 1946 Weinheim – Solomiya Brateyko, Kim Seongjin, Bao Chau Elisa Nguyen
TTG Bingen-Münster/Sarsheim - Choi Yelin
TSV Dachau 65 – none?
ESV Weil – Martine Toftaker, Ortega is leaving and will return to Spain
TSV 1909 Langstadt – none?

Will update the list if I see more confirmations.

Line-up tonight

Berlin vs Weinheim 3-6

Griesel/Mühlbach vs Harac/Jeger 3-1
Surjan/Neumann vs Chien/Wan 2-3
Surjan vs Wan 0-3
Griesel vs Chien 2-3
Neumann vs Jeger 2-3
Mühlbach vs Harac 1-3
Surjan vs Chien 3-2
Griesel vs Wan 3-2
Neumann vs Harac 1-3

No Kaneyoshi. Probably at the Asian youth champs. Checked the players list, she is not there. Commentators said that Japan didn't give her the okay. They will try to fly her in for Sunday, but she might not make it.

Today's match has concluded. Final scores in the post above.

Weinheim led 5-1, but went on to lose the next two matches. Wan was up 2-0 against Griesel and lost in the decider. Every game ended 11:9. Chien's match also went the full distance with her losing too. Harac got the winning point against Neumann who had problems with her left foot.

The re-match takes place on Sunday at 2PM German time. I will be there in person suffering under the summer heat. For everyone's sake I hope that there won't be a golden match, but if Kaneyoshi makes it it very well might happen.

Berlin will be streaming with their transportable equipment.

Today's match was cancelled after less than an hour. Weinheim won both doubles and Berlin didn't want to continue citing the immense heat in the gym as reason. Everyone was confused at first because this hadn't happened before. Were they going to just postpone the match? There is a mandatory minimum temperature, but nothing in the rules for hot temperatures. After a short break it was decided that Berlin lost 6:0 and Weinheim won the German championship for the first time in their third consecutive final. Plenty of people were still left to watch the happy players and staff finally take the title even though it left a bad aftertaste to win like that. The manager got emotional and teared up thanking everyone and his wife for putting up with everything. Yuan Wan, the team captain, also thanked everyone for the support. Harac got a present for her last match before returning to Turkey.

I did talk to a few people during the confusion and they were not happy with how the match went down since they paid for it or traveled quite a bit to watch the match or were just expecting more. Weinheim's coach Rainer Schmidt offered everyone free drinks and food as an apology, but when I went to the stall we still had to pay because catering was too big of an investment for them to give away for free.

A friend of mine and I agreed that it was probably Berlin's manager who is known for his questionable behavior that made the call. Yes, it was insanely hot. Most of us were already drenched in sweat from just watching for half an hour, but none of the players looked like they were at their limit and ready to give up. Kaneyoshi couldn't make it after all and after losing both doubles he probably saw no chance of winning. A draw would have already been enough for Weinheim to take the title. Weinheim's manager gave them the choice to stay for the awards ceremony, but they left and I'm not sure whether they received their silver medals.

I don't know if Berlin will try to protest and ask for a re-match, but this is definitely the weirdest match I have witnessed, both in person and online.

EDIT: Just read that Berlin's manager already protested about the heat before the match started and will put in an official complaint now. His team's wellbeing was more important to him than continuing.

This is interesting. I wonder if the official complaint is about wanting to replay the final match or making sure something like this will not be repeated again by playing at a neutral venue with good cooling.

Maybe it time for them to amend the rules by stating if it get’s to a certain temperature or knowing it’s going to be at a certain temperature from the weather forecast the match needs to be played at a neutral venue with good cooling.

So say if the top ranked team makes it to the final but the venue they usually play at gets too hot easily without good cooling then they get to play at a neutral venue at the final instead of using the 2nd semi finalist home venue that way it still fair for the top ranked team.

both teams had the same condition on the day.

if it was easy to get neutral venues with cooling at short notice, I don't think the 1. BL womens will be close to disappearing from the world. The league is broke. So it is probably a lot more difficult than just moving venues.

probably easier to move the time to maybe later (when it gets cooler), but then again, there was many travel arrangements - for players and for the fans.

Update on yesterday's final:

Berlin's manager put it in an official complaint. The DTTB will make a decision by the end of the week, but they are unlikely to agree because of the rules. So he might try the sports tribunal next just to fuck with the DTTB. Re-doing the match is not an option because the season is officially over as of today.

Berlin's players were not allowed to talk to the press and were confused about the situation too. Neumann supposedly told the manager she might have collapsed if they had played another half an hour.

Weinheim's coach blamed it all on the manager. Everyone knew it was going to be hot and how bad the gym gets so why wait until the day of the match to complain? If he cared about their players' wellbeing why let Neumann play who has been struggling with her foot since the German national championships? He think it's sad that now everyone is talking about Berlin and not looking at Weinheim's great performance this season. Table tennis in general suffers the most of from this. Would he have asked to stop if Berlin had won both doubles?

And you can't just get a different venue like it's not a big deal. ACs aren't that common in Germany and something like the arena in Frankfurt where the men played their final is way too expensive. Women's table tennis is not that attractive. Mobile ACs wouldn't have been able to do the job either.

I think they should just do the play-offs right after the league matches are over and finish the season in April like they used to do, but WTT and other competitions are in the way.

Statement from ttc berlin eastside courtesy of Google Translate.

"In our statement, we would primarily like to explain the objective reasons that led us to discontinue the final return match against TTC 1946 Weinheim on Sunday, June 29, 2025. We deliberately refrain from commenting on irrelevant posts on the internet.

One hour before the start of the match, the temperature measured by the head referee was 36.8 degrees Celsius. We duly submitted our written protest to the head referee before the match and began the match under protest. We also informed the head referee that we would not continue playing if the temperature continued to rise. After the end of the two doubles matches, the temperature was just under 39 degrees Celsius.
The air in the hall was stagnant.

Under these playing conditions, as President of TTC Berlin Eastside and with the associated duty of care, I could not assume any further responsibility for the health of our players. Had heat-related health problems occurred, they would have been foreseeable from the outset.

We have now also received a statement from our club doctor, Dr. Gunter Frenzel, who not only supports our actions but considers it absolutely necessary. Continuing to play was medically irresponsible.

We wonder why the head referee didn't seek a medical opinion, but instead considered himself so competent to continue the game or even start it at all?

Why did the DTTB approve the start time of 2 p.m.? The problem was foreseeable in advance.

Why didn't Weinheim play in another hall, even though there were alternatives!? In our view, as the host of a BL final, you must provide a proper venue for players and spectators.

Why does the European Table Tennis Union (ETTU) have an upper temperature limit (35 degrees Celsius!) in its regulations – and the DTTB doesn't?

All questions that the DTTB will now have to address first and foremost.

Alexander Teichmann
President of ttc berlin eastside Berlin, June 30, 2025"

They also posted on their website linked in the source above an interview with the manager that's otherwise only viewable behind a paywall. A lot of it is re-hashed, but there are a few more new tidbits. Neumann's parents who were there and coaching didn't want to continue either. When asked if they had also stopped continuing had they won the doubles he said that's entirely speculation. The match should have never started under those conditions. WTT events have a doctor that can stop matches. But the conditions were the same for everyone? He disagrees. Weinheim had a freezer with ice bags. This is hilarious. You knew it was going to be hot. Why didn't you bring any or ask Weinheim if they could store yours? I brought cold water, a towel and a fan with me. I saw a few players bring electric hand fans because they knew it was going to be hot. The manager also questioned the date of the final, but he knows it's hard to figure one out. The outcome of the match doesn't look great for the league and the sport, but he says they are not responsible for playing conditions as guests.

Berlin's official protest was rejected yesterday by the DTTB as expected. They have two weeks now to appeal the decision at the sports tribunal which by the way costs 200€. I haven't seen a statement about the rejection yet.

I did however find a comment from Berlin's livestream and camera operator regarding the discussion on Facebook. I don't have an account so I might have not been able to read the comment in its entirety.

Courtesy of Google Translate:

"As a contemporary witness on site and livestream cameraman, I would like to add my personal observations and facts to the current discussion surrounding the 2025 Bundesliga final. The press articles in the "Weinheimer Nachrichten," all of which were also published on the TTC 1946 Weinheim e.V. website, in particular, prompted me to take this step, also after discussions with the responsible editor. I wrote a letter to the editor about this today to the "Weinheimer Nachrichten," which I am publishing here for anyone interested:

Subject: Letter to the editor regarding the article "Cancellation, scandal, celebration: TTC 46 Weinheim is German champion"

Dear Editors, As a livestream cameraman, I was in the pits during the German Championship return match. Your online photo from July 1 (link below) shows two Weinheim players being provided with cooling pads and fans in the control room – aids that the visiting team was unaware of.

Unequal conditions
The pads and fan were located exclusively in the control room behind the home bench. Without information and access, Berlin was denied any cooling – a violation of the ITTF principle of "same facilities for both teams." The sentence in the article, "The conditions were the same for both teams," is therefore incorrect.

Health Risk
The temperature in the hall was 38–40°C; the WBGT index was over 34°C. International guidelines classify such temperatures as acutely hazardous to the circulatory system. Even three quick 3-0 singles matches would have exposed all players to this heat for about 45 minutes; each five-set match further increases the risk.

Written Protest
The ttc berlin eastside therefore submitted a written protest to the referee one hour before the start of the match – out of a duty of care, not a tactical consideration.

False Comparison with 2023 Weinheim's board speaks of "equal conditions." According to the DWD's hourly data, the indoor WBGT on June 11, 2023, was around 28°C – 6–10°C lower than in 2025. There can be no question of equality.

Under these circumstances, abandoning the game was the only responsible decision. Had a player collapsed, the headlines would be different today.

Link to the WNOZ photo (Yuan Wan with a cooling pad): wnoz.de/sport/weinheim-und-bergstrasse/abbruch-skandal-feier-der-ttc-46-weinheim-ist-deutscher-meister-729072.html"

I find it hilarious how nitpicky his complaint is. Mini-fans and ice bags they didn't have ? A room you couldn't access? The fans belonged to the players, not all of them had one. You can't keep anything cool long enough during the trip? Surely you didn't arrive the day of the match and had plenty of time to cool ice bags somewhere if you had asked. I remember seeing some Japanese players on WTT events with ice bags they kept in cooler bags. I doubt those were provided by WTT unless someone here knows better. I seriously can not understand why they came unprepared. I could ask Weinheim's manager if Berlin actually approached them about some relief during the heat. I couldn't make it last year, but the conditions were bad too the year before that. Did they bring a device to measure that index? Not every building heats up the same way. Weinheim's gym is by the far the worst I have ever witnessed during summer. Why referring to ITTF principles? DTTB makes the guidelines for the playing conditions and the clubs certainly don't have the same kind of venue anyway.

This all comes back to there being way too many events and the leagues get the short stick and have to submit to WTT basically. It's why the final happened over two months after the last league match.
