Truls' post-match statement - he compliments Haug, says he would have lost regardless of that service fault call... At first hand, it's a very respectful comment, admirable sportsmanship... TERRIBLE mentality for an elite athlete, though (if he honestly meant it). Especially considering the momentum was in his favor.

So he's back from 0-3, it's 2-3 now, he leads 2-1 in game six and the umpire faults his serve... He flips the F out, throws a tantrum and loses six points in a row, costing him the match...

Not the first time this has happened to him and it clearly shows he was mentally in a bad place all along. From personal experience, I'd say external factors that kept him from fully immersing himself into the match. Which factors... None of my business, or anyone else's, tbh.

Just an observation.

It seems the Freitas match removed his limitations. Whatever you think of Freitas he can hit a high quality ball with variation on both sides and will test all kinds of balls against you.. Adjusting to that kind of player makes you ready for anyone.

The response is class. Or do we want athletes who will share space repeatedly on many occasions to continually give opponents reasons to dislike them? After all, Haug did play well regardless of momentum. And if we open that can od worms, the Hugo may only have lost in the Olympics aemis because his coach didnt call a timeout and Wang may only have lost because his racket was broken on an uncontrolled timeline. Just let the table and the players determine the results.

Please rephrase, this sounds like a sentence that lost all meaning in the translation.

1. He was up 3-1 on Freitas. Freitas raised the spin level and got it to 3-3, and Haug adjusted to get it to 4-3. When a opponent at the level of Freitas messes with your tempo and you find solutions, you become adaptable and your primarly limitations with being good at only one speed are gone.

2. No I read it quite well, you just considered he meant it truthfully which would be a terrible mindset for an athlete, I amsaying he had no choice but to say tbat, the alternative opens a can of worms and introduces hostility that is all competely needless.

Could just be a way to move on and acknowledge he was on edge and ready to blow. He’s human. We get tired and stressed. Athletes too.
Holding on to the anger and lamenting his reaction to the call doesn’t seem to be a better option to me.
To state that this is a ‘TERRIBLE mindset’ for an elite athlete is really not accurate.
Elite performers resist using external, uncontrollable factors (like an umpire's bad fault call) as an explanation for a loss because it would indicate helplessness (Coffee & Rees, 2008).
If a performer attributes a poor stretch or a loss to factors they cannot control their expectation of future success is more likely to go down rather than up.

Re-framing the outcome and attributing it to controllable factors or crediting an opponent's high play standard protects the belief that its all in their hands.

What Truls said indicated exactly that he has an elite mentality.

He did suffer what we would call a ‘catastrophic breakdown’ (Fazey & Hardey, 1988) though. He’ll likely do so again but it’s not down to poor mentality. More an inevitability of his high octane play style.

Correct. Brief psych breakdown as to why you are right posted above.

Kaufmann showing the CNT how it's done... 4-0 over Han Ying. Impressive.
Huh? 2 losses in straight games after 4 wins that all went the distance.

Did you even read what Sato and Hashimoto had to say about their latest losses?

OMG. Zaharia in tears after being egregiously called for a serve violation at 14-15 down.
Commentator is fuming. Saying he is the same guy who's made all the other awful calls and should be investigated.
Said he's gonna confront him after the match. He's so angry and Zaharia can't stop crying.
I think the commentator made it personal. Support all umpires rightfully call illegal serves.

Truls' serves were borderline legal and illegal. He does not toss the ball with open palm, but kind of pinches it and throws it back.

He was emotional and I liked it. it was like back in the day with the Eurosport commentators on various sports.
Perhaps it was not egregious. I'll bow to the technical experts on that. He seemed absolutely convinced though.

Unlike us, elite athletes undergo psychological training with specialized professionals who get paid serious money for it.
Seems you missed the rest of my post. You cannot create a robot. Things go wrong but he gets it right often. His response was not 'TERRIBLE'. It was very understandable and justifiable as an elite athlete.
I spent my day today at the annual Japan sports psychology conference with exactly the people you mention so I'm well aware of their utility. I'm not being adversarial here. Just offering some perspective.

And I was supposed to get all this from "Freitas match removed his limitations."? :ROFLMAO:

Yes, changing tempo and tactical pivots are essential components of competitive table tennis.

This is where coaches come in. They sit in their corner, observe and analyze. And all this amounts to exactly nothing if they can't communicate it to the player properly. This is what separates elite coaches from all the others.

You missed the rest of my post then.
I did, sorry.

Re-framing the outcome and attributing it to controllable factors or crediting an opponent's high play standard protects the belief that its all in their hands.
As opposed to... ?

You can take it or leave it.
Every argument is a learning experience.
