Blade for a child/beginner

Hello,

My 7.5 year old started playing table tennis. He is using my old paddle now, but I told him that if he makes sufficient progress in 3-6 months, we will assemble him his own paddle.

A few requirements from me:

Light blade.
Allaround blade.
All wood blade.
Fairly inexpensive but quality to use for a while.

I will probably get him Xiom Vega Pro rubber for his blade as it is light, inexpensive and pretty good. However, rubber suggestions are welcome as well.

My little boy chose an Andro Nightmare blade, mostly because of the handle size.

That’s mainly because we weren’t at a Butterfly shop. I believe a thin-handle version of the Korbel exist, and that’s an amazing blade.

EDIT: looking around, I see Butterfly has an "XXS" option for several blades including the Korbel and the Boll Alround. These XXSes have a very thin flared handle suitable for younger children and even POTUSes or other small-handed people.

Donic Appelgren Allplay
Stiga Allround Classic

Xiom Vega Intro

I'd concur with the suggestion of the Appelgren Allplay. My 8 year old uses it along with Mark V rubbers and the combination is light enough for him to wield comfortably, as well as generating a decent amount of spin and control.

Yep.

Korbel is a great blade for an adult. But for a kid younger than 8, the head size would make it too heavy and head heavy. Plus, it would be faster than an 8 year old would want.

Appelgren Allplay is ideal. Mark V would also be a good choice of rubbers. Either Vega Intro or Mark V would be better choices than Vega Pro for a kid.

I would go for the Der_Echte Special... a Galaxy 896 All+ to OFF- wood blade, a new sheet of XP 2008 on BH, and a recycled FH rubber he likes. Total new cost is blade 16 bucks, rubber 8 bucks, shipping $5 in USA. If you get it as a combo with two XP2008, you get a free bat case and you could assemble it and keep a sheet of XP2008... total cost is around $35 or so with shipping.

That is one good way to get a start and then later get a different bat, keep the D.E.S. as a fallback, and kick sum tail.

www.colstt.com Cole is the man.

I often use a Der_Echte special when I am in between blades. Especially if my main blade was OFF- to OFF or so, when I play with the Der_Echte special, I have to pay attention to shot selection and building the point. These are not terrible instinctive skills to build.
