Hey guys, just got curious on how does Cazuo Matsumoto changes his non-playing side color to red? Maybe there's a way to either paint it or just stick paper on it? No clue actually.

Here's the vid of Cazuo's jpen, Cazuo Matsumoto vs Koki Niwa

Pls help out, thanks

only black is allowed for the non playing side. Because of the rule of clearly contrast colours.
The rule states one side black the other side red (now actually more colors) what side does not matter.

It is legal, he doesn't strike the ball with that side so it doesn't matter what is done to change the color, so long as the surface is non reflective and "of a bright color clearly distinguishable from black and from the color of the ball"

[ITTF handbook 2.4.6: The surface of the covering material on a side of the blade, or of a side of the blade if it is left uncovered, shall be matt, black on one side, and of a bright colour clearly distinguishable from black and from the colour of the ball on the other.]

This is like 40 year old mindset, where red is on FH, so black is atthe back.

Nowadays, the rule is black on one side and any other color on the other side (red and new colors).

To answer OP

it is just a sheet to stick on.
Its sold almost everywhere in countries where Jpen or Kpen still is used.
Red is however still common. The little usage of "no back rubber" market would likely mean, tt vendors won't introduce other colors"

Red and Black is common, so your equipment would be legal.
PS, you can't have "wood" only on the back, it would be illegal.

It seems as though raw wood itself would be illegal, light colored wood is too similar to white (ball), and dark colored wood is too similar to black, but if the blade surface itself comes colored from the factory in a color that complies with 2.4.6, I think it would be technically legal to leave it without secondhand coloring agents

I should of say, wood + color of the natural wood.
End of the day, this is like 0.0000001% of table tennis players to worry about, and most of them have color on FH and the default black painted backside on the Jpen already.
