Sure looks like it. Looks like two of the younger Taiwanese players took turns to distract Sora.

Video evidence backing Sora's flash claim:

At face value, I accept this, but in this modern era of faked images etc., lots of corroborating evidence is needed. This might not even have happened at the specific time etc.

If these guys are just audience, they will probably be no consequence. But if they really table tennis players, they might be in trouble.

And I don't think LYJ knew anything beforehand.

Yea true really hope it’s not AI and these video and images are valid proof. Hopefully if WTT have all the cameras angles with recording they might be able to investigate if video and images are 100% real but who knows if that footage is save.

No way LYJ knew or instructed his teammates to do that. I hope the video and images are real cause if not his teammates might be punish for something they didn’t do.

In the video evidence even LYJ coach called out the flash as well so I don’t think he or LYJ knew what was going on.

The pictures that supposedly show that LYJ's teammates used flash to disrupt Matsushima are most likely generated by AI.

Look at the picture in G2 at 9:9. The seats around them are mostly empty. In G6 (see picture below) a few more seats are taken, but most of them are still empty. In the pictures with the flash, they are surrounded by people 🧐 You can draw your own conclusions.

Right, here's the longer video showing 3 separate flashes consecutively on reddit. LYJ looks frustrated so I doubt he was involved. I'd like to give those kids the benefit of the doubt as well, looks like they were taking pics with the flash in between points as well so they probably just don't know how to turn off the flash.

Thanks for sharing the video. I take my comment back.

Of course, it's unacceptable that someone tried to disrupt Matsushima. Hope it was ignorance (not knowing how to turn off the flash) rather than malicious behavior.

Statement of Apology

To all coaches, players, and friends concerned about the incident during the Men’s Singles Final at the 2026 Beijing Grand Smash:

Our team wishes to extend our sincerest apologies for the disruption and impact caused by the use of a camera flash during the Men’s Singles Final at the 2026 Beijing Grand Slam. We are deeply sorry to the players, coaches, and on-site personnel who were affected by this incident.

Our team has always prioritized character education and the cultivation of sportsmanship among our students. We will use this incident as an opportunity to further guide our students to understand that, in a competitive setting, beyond focusing on their own performance, they must adhere to competition rules, respect the order of the event, and fully uphold the rights of every participant.

A student's growth requires the joint support of both school and family. In addressing this incident, we will adopt an educational and supportive approach to guide students in facing the issue squarely, reflecting deeply, and learning to take responsibility for their actions. We aim to ensure that the values of respecting others and adhering to rules are put into practice in both daily life and future competitions, thereby preventing similar situations from occurring again.

We once again express our sincere apologies for the inconvenience and impact caused by this incident, and we thank everyone for their reminders, guidance, and understanding. We will take this as a lesson to continue upholding character education and sports ethics, hoping that all participants can work together to maintain a positive competitive atmosphere based on mutual respect and fairness.

We offer this apology and ask for your understanding.

Sincerely,
Team Songshan Cheng-Zheng/Songshang Cheng-Jheng)

(To the young players from Taiwan: could you please learn to conduct yourselves better?

You were wearing Team Chinese Taipei jerseys on the sidelines—presumably you were in Beijing for a youth tournament, right? As athletes, you really ought to be more mindful of your behavior. How would you feel if someone used a flash while you were competing? Do you think that’s right? Also, don't go creating trouble for yourselves only to have Lin Yun-Ju end up bearing the consequences)

A good article by a content creator on the timeline of events, with Matsushima's mom and LYJ's agent involved as well... Oops.

破案了!松岛辉空与林昀儒最后确实有闪光灯,涉事者身份特殊,所属团队已道歉!

Good to see an official apology from the Taiwanese club.

Camera flashes have been a problem in Japan long before WTT came along. I've witnessed spectators in the National Champs using their camera flashes during rallies multiple times, sometimes from seats very close to the players. Most probably just don't realize how distracting it can be, but I'm pretty sure some have done it deliberately, like what I witnessed at WTT Yokohama.

It's even more problematic at WTT events, where only the tables are brightly lit and the rest of the arena is dark, making camera flashes particularly distracting. And of course, it doesn't help that so many fans are cheering for non-Japanese players (jk).

Which is why JTTA has stopped using spotlights after Zennihon Takkyu 2016. Plays were continuously interrupted.

I am glad the CTTTA apologized. But, those players should have known better than to use flash given that it's been a known problem at a number of tournaments. Do a test recording to make sure before you record the real thing.

I wonder what punishments these Chinese Taipei juniors will get. It’s going to make LYJ and the coach look bad now as people will think they were the ones that planned for the flashes to happen

Yeah, it's definitely a bad look and would have been even worse had Matsushima lost. If it were up to me, I would ban them from being in the stands in the future.

Additionally, anyone in the Chinese media as well as LYJ's agent, who falsely accused Matsushima of making it up to gain an advantage, should issue an apology.

The flash issue keeps happening at multiple tournaments, and WTT/ITTF really should do something about it.
