I started making enquires for a custom blade I want to build.
I was kind of disappointed that custom blades are not really as custom as I thought.
I mean you can't specify the thickness of the layers.
because it's not like they have a tree and they cut it.
they already buy the cut layers of wood.
so there's a predefined set of thicknesses you can use, for example for koto would they only have 0.5 thickness generally
what do you think about this?
do you know any blade maker who will create blades with the thickness specified?

That is nor entirely tru. You can order a different thicknes of veneers but you have to order a big amount. Not only one sheet. And for the core it is the same.
And here is the problem. If yoy do this type of order you will have to count 100 blades to get rid of the material and get the many back.

so that's why, you are pretty much limited to the stock the blade maker posseses..
he won't order a certain specific thickness just to make 1 blade.
maybe a big factory like butterfly can get any specific thickness, but their blades are like 350 USD.

do you think there's a big difference between say two 1.0 plies put together and one 2.0 ply?
you can tell the difference easily when playing?

do you know the characteristics of koto wood?
can you name any wood that would be a good replacement with similar characteristics?

koto is pretty unique and i do not think you can find replacement .. the nearest i think is mahogany .
And if you glue two layers of 1mm together it will be stiffer then pure 2mm ply.

is there a way to make a blade faster by gluing the plies with more glue?
varnishing every single ply separate?
ever tried anything like this?

Hmmm gluing extra give you more stiffness if you are using epoxy. But you will get more weight.
I have tried burning.... You get less weight but the wood gets very fragile and i do think it gets week after a few weeks of hard play. ....
