Why is that? Why are offensive threads allowed to be questioned, but unoffensive threads are not?

Moreover, what exactly constitutes as offensive and what does not? Is it based on some kind of universal truth? What is offensive to you might be completely acceptable to another person.

Archo,

I know you are just messing but yes, I was irritated as most people would be. Unless the thread is offensive, It should be a case of:

If you like a thread, get involved.
If you don't like a thread, ignore it.

So simple really..

Men, questioning the premise of a whole question is the ultimate debate tactic. I thought you would know that.

But it seems that archo has pointed out the real problem here. You just did not like Carl did. How that amounts to bullying, I am not sure. If your thread was so great, wouldn't people who loved it have bullied Carl away from it?

I like this new bullying meme... can anyone get some pictures to match?

There is 0 benefit to questioning the premise if a lot of people are commenting on it and generally enjoying it.
Offense is subjective, you are right, and if someone found a thread offensive then perhaps it should be looked into changing. But this wasn't the case for GOAT :)

Wait a second... you said you liked debate, and debate is supposed to be open to all perspectives, including questioning the premise. Or do you prefer debates that are limited by your perspectives?

I do like debate, and I did debate with him at the time. But you have to understand that a debate thats purpose is to knock someone down is not one I enjoy.

This thread has officially gone meta - we (well, some of us) are now discussing merits of threads and important distinctions between 'debate' and 'argument'. Armchair philosophers among us (*cough* Arch *cough*) are probably quite happy.

P.S. Sorry for being the usual wet blanket.

Yecats, imagine the following scenario. This is based on some stories I have heard.

In a worse part of the world, a man of an unwelcome ethnicity, sexuality, political opinion or nationality is being held by the people of a town.

The militia has brought the man to the town square, and they have broken the bones in his feet, arms, hands and jaw. A rubber tire doused in gasoline is fitted around the man's shoulders so that he could not move his arms even if he had the capability to, and he is given a lighted match. He is told to either light the gasoline on the tire on fire using his mouth, or they will shoot him themselves if he refuses.

The townsmen and militia are firing rifles and light machine guns into the air, and the townspeople are screaming and shouting insults to the man. No one in the town opposes what is unfolding, at least not vocally. Everyone seems to be enjoying the occasion.

Is it right to interfere or look down upon such behavior? If so, why?

OK, no more debates - this is an argument and I use my TTD mob ruling super powers given to be TopSideDictatorCarl to end this discussion and return it to table tennis.

Okay, here are the two first videos of a 2 video series of Brett teaching me serves. I have not taken my recent reverse serve problems to Brett, BTW. I want to try to fix them myself, but Yecats is refusing to help.

@NextLevel

Hahaha, TopSideDictatorCarl... :rolleyes:

I suppose Yecats can answer me privately if he wishes.

Now, my equipment question. I haven't come to a conclusion yet.

I want to avoid tacky, hard sponge for now.

Given a limited budget, which would be a better buy for me currently:

729 Focus 3 Snipe on both sides, or one sheet of similarly priced proper Euro rubber on the forehand and my current 729 FX on the backhand?

@UpSideDownCarl
@Der_Echte

I have heard Der_ especially goes the "Nice rubber on FH, banana peel on BH" method, but it might not work for me.

@NL , great stuff and great debate , I hope you don't mind a mini filibuster ....
I have to do the social courtesy of accepting Archo's apology, it takes a lot of guts to say sorry if you really mean it , a piece of advise don't use "whoever" , especially because a very similar word "whatever" has been abused by teens all over the world and it comes very close to cast shadows on the earnestness ...
I did not hold a grudge against you for so long for what you said, you did offend me at the time but I don't like holding grudges and definitely not against somebody who I don't take seriously in an online forum , I don't think thats what Carl meant when he mentioned the incident, he was just trying to show you an example of how you have rubbed people the wrong way in the past , but he can clarify himself. But anyways, apology accepted.

The thing is , we will really know that you are trying to change your ways when we see changes in your behavior :
1. Get to a table tennis club , even if once a week
2. try to get a real coach to help you
3. don't wear jeans and post good videos which will really get you good feedback , the stuff you post is very painful to watch, most of the time.
4. however if you really don't want to do any of this, please don't say you are advancing by leaps and bounds ever so often , because most of us here were not trained since we were kids and we really know how hard it is to develop in this sport when you were not trained for 6-7 hours daily since you were a 6 year old
and stop your attention seeking antics , people will automatically pay you the amount of attention you deserve as long as you establish your credibility ..

... as they say actions speak louder than words ...

@Yecats : Not sure how long you have been following table tennis forums , but the people who are here for quite some time know that the top two topics to start an excited discussion in a table tennis forum is "Who was the greatest table tennis player of all time" and "Will Ma Long be able to beat Waldner in his prime" .

Please understand people here really love their sport and are very passionate about their icons (including Der_Echte and his unabashed drooling over Seo Hyo Won :p ) , so its very similar to starting a debate about Pele and Maradona in a soccer forum .

Also, the nature of debates, unless you are talking about goody two shoes high school debaters, all over the world is that if people who are passionate about the subject will start attacking your premise and arguments. And thats how debates are supposed to go and boy o boy you should look up youtube for some parliament debates it will help you understand.
I have been attacked racially in this forum and I let it go purely because I knew the person in question was a pathological impostor and I knew very well taking an offense would be playing into his hand and giving him the satisfaction of knowing that he was able to get under my skin , not sure you were around at that time.

As long its not a personal attack and nobody is calling you names or questioning your lucidity I don't see any reason to take offense as long as it is a fact based discussion. If you are really that thin skinned then you always have the option of skipping the posts / putting people on ignore lists.

If you find the thread in question, you will see that the arguments or the opinions that Yecats presented and enjoyed sounded like someone who had only been watching and playing table tennis that was played in the last 5 years and hadn't taken the time to expand his knowledge of TT history. Maybe I was wrong, but that was the vibe I think Carl was responding to.

@NL To me your serve looks good. Low bounce and there seems to be good spin as well. What you could try to do is more weight shifting into the serve.
When I was practicing reverse pendulum serves I found out that leaning into it more helped me to get different angles onto the ball and also the possibility to get more or less power. I will try to get a video if it next time I play ( who knows when that is going to be :()
