PS:
the coach analysis about today's tournament
(+) good long serves (+ 3rd ball combo). Today, BH opening loop was much better than last time
(-) I struggled many times with my FH trying to loop the ball before I was in the right position. (= bad footwork).----> Yep thats true, i was bad there, especially in my match against the coach and his defensive style. and also when receiving long serves.

FWIW - 30+ yrs ago, I used to play in a Friday night league ... format was 11 matches - 9 S and 2 D, in that order. So if the teams are relatively even, one team will go into the 10th match, the first Doubles match, with a 5-4 lead and we used to practice doubles often for this reason.

in France for a long time, our league format was 6 players, divided in A and B subteam of 3 players, both A teams face each other, so do both B teams. for 3x3=9 singles each and 1 double in each subteam match. so 20 matches total. All matches would be played even if a team reached 11 victories. Doubles were normally scheduled to be played in the middle, but often teams would agree to play them at the end, - i hated that because i felt doubles completely lost their interest in they were played in the end, it would usually make it boring, while if played in the correct order, teams with good doubles could get this important point which might impact the final result.

Ah yeah, doubles should be played in the middle - will change the strategy of the whole match. I do not remember how many members were allowed per team. If a team reached 6 wins, the rest of the games need not be played.

No official ratings points were won/lost.

Not feeling 100%, not sure what it is. I'm not physically sick or anything but i didn't feel 100%.

Played Mark Berg last night... always have fun playing him. Using him as a barometer to see my current level. He is 65 yrs old (i'm 52), lefty SH with anti on his bh, doesn't twiddle. IMO he has excellent ball control and moves his partner side to side. In some ways, our games are similar in that I move my partner side to side too. He peaked 3x at 2000... ~1800 player.

I have never beaten him in a match yet. I'm not looking for a win against him per se ... i am looking for consistency in my game, if i win vs him, i know my game is getting consistent.

Last night played 2 matches. I know what I have to improve on ... using the American Hinoki CPen with 2 Tenergy ... TT is very humbling ... after playing/hitting with that setup for 6x, I thought i got the hang/feel/touch of the Tenergy. After doing multiballs, I thought i had my loop back. Reality is the great alarm clock!

I lost many points on my block/punch - ball flew off the Tenergy 80-FX like a cannonball. Also lost many points on my serve. It is what it is... played him at a time I'm getting used to a new setup as well as not feeling 100%.

With that said, first match results ... *mental drumroll please*

-13, -8, 7, 6, -8

Have video however, it's a bad angle, propped phone against the wall and not clear view of our play - see back and butt more LOL. Have edited the vid down to a little over 5 mins, but didn't have a chance to upload. Not even sure if i should post as most points in the close match were over in 3 balls. If anyone wants to see how bad i am, will post. But match is not pretty. Only 10 shots or so from the whole match from the both of us are highlight worthy. we look like 2 1200 players playing with points ending on 2nd or 3rd ball lol NOT PRETTY AT ALL. Will say, i played my old style with a long serve motion. Mixed up my serves as well as placement, but lost too many points on bad serves. My FH pick was pathetic. It may be an excuse, but really wasn't feeling 'all there'/'in the moment' -- guessing it is a hyrdration issue, didn't pace drinking water better. Non-existent footwork ... didn't feel like moving... stretched too many times ... 2 good smashes, one bad form loop, and many many balls flying off rubber :(

Played 2nd match, don't recall scores, have vid, didn't edit. may not edit or even post, more of the same, although there may be some highlight-worthy shots. Lost 3-1.

Hit with "P" ... i switched between SH and PH. My SH BH stroke may not be perfect but with P, it was very steady. My SH FH needs work ... i may cock my wrist too much like Shuki. Didn't really loop.

My PH FH i'm noticing my elbow still flying up that Carl pointed out to me ages ago. Very strange, need work.

SO if you want a laugh at my expense, i will hold no grudges, just let me know, will upload vid and post tomorrow for your chuckles.

Intending just to hit and not play matches tonight ... if i do play a match will try a SH only match. Will see if i can get video LOL

So I'm browsing random videos about lower level rubbers on YouTube, because all I see all day is Tenergy DHS Tibhar so I was curious.

I come upon this video, and the shot at 4:00 or so from the kid in the blue shirt looks really familiar. I'd been reviewing some 2 months old video yesterday, and I found the shot in question. I put them side by side in still frames to see what's different and what's not, because these kids look coached.

http://imgur.com/a/bUSdi

This is what I came up with. To my eyes my shot looks to be faster and bounce lower on video, under my opponent's racket. To the kid's credit, he is younger and probably a bit weaker than I am, and he played it on a harder shot with more spin on it. Although I would expect the topspin to reverse a bit, too.

I would do a video example but I don't even have the time right now. I'm not sure if the other player wants to be shown or not so I would have to do a bit of editing.

To me the kid looks really leaned over on his right leg and his weight doesn't shift early enough (In fact his left leg goes up), while I'm a bit too upright and stiff but I seem to have maybe slightly better timing. This is two months old, so I'm not sure what I do now. Lower right back is acting up slightly now, so I'm not sure if I will play at all next week or just feed spins to avoid any continued injury.

I thought i was getting better.

But this morning, i went to the usual club, with a friend visiting from HK. I woke up late as he called him, and I jumped out of bed. but thats a lame excuse. after a quick warmup, we played some sets, and in only 30mns, he won 7-0, with me only scoring 5 points on average per set. Usually its roughly 50/50 between us.

I have always had problems against his serves, but today i wasn't able to receive at all. Simply, he puts too much spin (sidespin + backspin or topspin), perhaps even more spin and deepness than usual, and he kept making the long serves to my FH either with the hammer serve (from his FH side) or long BH serve to my FH side. I think i missed (or very weak receive) 80% of receives so there wasn't any match...

Fortunately, after 30mns only, it was too crowded and we were kicked out for one hour but we didn't wanna wait, so we headed for breakfast. If we continued i would have probably lost 20-0....

I know you don't want to sound this as an excuse , I simply can't play if I get up from sleep right before playing ... lose my feeling and the brain does not function ...

surely my brain was not functioning well, but i think honestly the result wouldn't have been much different even if i had been more awake. If I can't even get back the serves, there's no hope

Come on serve return is the most difficult thing there is in the sport, and you are saying you were doing your best without your brain ... we like to think that its about reflex, but I don't believe that is the only requirement in case of serve return , its more about figuring out the spin and remembering the clues and adapting to it the next time you see the same set of clues ... just treat it as a bad day at work , forget it and play normal and awake the next time

I think I'm going to be doing a lot of feeding backspin in the coming weeks.

My back felt a bit weird last monday when I did one stroke, so I took it easy. After that I've got the same kind of small tingling and occasional soreness in my back like I got during my injury. I took the week off.

I think I re-injured myself slightly, so I'm going to completely stop doing anything that stresses my back and let it heal for however long it takes. It was going just fine until I went and stressed it again.

I'm not just going to stop table tennis, so that means I'll be feeding backspin and blocking mostly. In the meanwhile I'm trying to find out why exactly my looping motion even stresses my back at all, and if it's a bad thing.
