Defend or Offense

I am William, 23 years old, Indonesia.

I usually play with 2 bet. But know I confuse to decide which blade I want to be serious.

First bet is :
Blade : Butterfly Koji Matsu****a Pro Model
FH : DHS MEMO II (Red)
BH : TSP Curl P-1 R (Black)

Second Bet is :
Blade : Butterfly Gergely
FH : DHS Neo Hurricane II (Red)
BH : Donic Coppa Jo Gold (Black)

So, when I want to play offense, I play with this 1nd bet (Gergely). But sometime I want to play defense with this Matsuhita blade. But for serious, playing with this different bet will cause I can't consentrate while playing.

Is everybody can give me any suggestion or critics about what I had done?

William, I would suggest you using an all round set up, instead of using 2 different bats.

Will, daripada pake 2 bat enakan pake satu, apalagi satunya setup defense satu offense..
Pilih satu style aja kalo 2 ribet..

I'd take an allround bat, with rubbers that you can sometimes attack with but also defend.

My sentiments exactly Rhydian. Will, gunakan satu bat sahaja, tapi jangan gunakan offence atau defence. Tetapi, gunakan blade/kayu all round..jadi kamu boleh attack bila keadaan membenarkan, dan boleh defend bila tidak boleh. Seperti juga rubber/getah, gunakan yang membolehkan kamu menyerang atau bertahan.

I would advise that you just choose one style, either offense or defense. Switching around between the two means that generally you don't master either one. The footwork is just very different between them, not to mention the obvious stroke differences.

And sorry for the violation of the forum rules about using English language..

I think here is a good setup for you :
- Blade = Allround ( You can choose All+ or All- depending on your preference )
- Forehand = 1.8mm is good, 2mm if you wanted to attack considering you are an allrounder
- Backhand = Defense rubber like Butterfly Tackiness-C (lagi diskon stok lama tuh di daya prima tapi ga tau kualitasnya) or Tibhar Super Defense 40 with 1.6mm thickness

I use soft rubber and play offensively but when I'm pushed back from the table I can chop if I want to, and thats using tibhar nimbus sound and soft and a waldner carbon blade. You can use a bat that's offensively oriented but if you develop good touch you can still use it defensively, it's all about practice and feeling

Absolutely, it doesn't mean if you have an offensive set up, you won't be able to defend, chop and slice. But I must admit, even intermediate players find it difficult. I would chop only if the ball is too low to attack or I am out of position since it'll buy me a bit of time for me to get back to the table. You need practice no doubt, but I only advice it as a last resort to stay in the point.

Yes you can choose for an allround setup with 2 soft rubbers. Also if you like chopping with backhand and you feel you backhand loop is maybe not that good, you could go for short pips on backhand to chop/push. Gionis Panagiotis would be a good example of how to mix offensive with defensive style. Not sure if he uses short or long pips, I'm not an expert at that But I would choose short since u can also attack with it if I'm right.

Some people chop way tooo hard when they try to chop the ball. And often I just see the ball going out of table in speed of light

One of our TT member using some donic soft rubber, he did able to chop the ball quite well, and the ball often come back in a very low trajectory. And he did do some offense sometimes when he has the confidence. The down side of the rubber is that it is very slow, but the spin produce is alot. So you may want to try a soft rubber setup for a all round blade.

WiWa is onto it, short pips on backhand and a decent attacking forehand rubber can be a good combo. I have that on an old bat I used to play with for a while I was just trying it out as I love to chop. Nothing beats the satisfacting of chopping someone off then pivoting round to finish them off with a ripper forehand hehe

By the way at my club is a player who randomly attacks an defends very well whenever he feels like it. He uses (I believe) 2 sriver FX's. Those are in fact offensive rubbers but without glue or anything they are slow enough to chop as well. He attacks with either very spinny loops and when it is possible a smash from any position haha.

The conclusion is to use a setup with great control without sacrificing too much speed
Classic rubbers like Sriver or Mark V is a great choice..

Thanks, yea it is kinda ironic but I have to live with it as long as it lasts haha. But in fact it is the reason that I started watching all tt youtube vids and subscribed to the forum

Yeah, Sriver rubbers are good for that! I played one with Sriver G2 FX and I could chop like Joo Se Hyuk and attack like Ma Long (ok, there's a little bit of exageration ^^) Nevertheless, that was a good rubber and I think you should try it. Sriver FX is also good!
