aren't they missing too many balls here for being pro players?

gatien seems to take the ball really early with the fh loop and the movement is as minimal as possible.
(not saying it's wrong just analyzing the movement)

Speed glue and 38mm ball was a different era. There are good reasons (imo) why neither are around today

I think he played a very high risk high reward playing style? Looping primarily with the arm with that whippy motion at the rising phase, trying to kill the ball.
Would be interesting how he would have played today? Feels like this playing style must be easier with the plastic ball with less spin, but maybe to slow today and need better backhand.

So far we have spent like 12 years with the 40+ ball with no major rule changes, thats crazy to me. Oldschool table tennis lasted for decades before ITTF switched from 38mm to 40mm celluloid in 2000, from 21pt to the 11pt game in 2001, banned hidden serves in 2002, and did away with speed glue in 2008. The 40+ era has lasted around twice as long as the post speed glue celluloid ball era
