That doesn't make sense; the softer sponge will compress sooner/more. The reaction force will just be lower on the rebound.
softer sponges would compress and adsorb easier and release quicker too
If you heard the term mushy, then try spin with a mushy H3 rubber. Little spin and little power.
You need a firm sponge to bite onto the ball.

Of course, I am presuming you can hit into the hard sponge, otherwise if you only playing with topsheet, then please ignore the above.

The softer sponge releases slower, with a lower hz and spring rating. That's why they produce a slower ball.
