softer sponges would compress and adsorb easier and release quicker tooThat doesn't make sense; the softer sponge will compress sooner/more. The reaction force will just be lower on the rebound.
If you heard the term mushy, then try spin with a mushy H3 rubber. Little spin and little power.
You need a firm sponge to bite onto the ball.
Of course, I am presuming you can hit into the hard sponge, otherwise if you only playing with topsheet, then please ignore the above.
