The old school of gluing work growing in popularity nowdays.
We called this gluing method "nipple." This was used only with VOC glues, so that the solvent wouldn't evaporate immediately, but would instead soak the sponge as much as possible and soften it. This gluing method is unnecessary for water-based glues.

I've seen people spread glue across the ENTIRE back of a new sheet of rubber, even areas that would never cover the blade and will be cut off anyway. (For example Timo
). Is there a reason for this?

Why wouldn't you save some glue by spreading only within the areas that will cover the blade?

Glue is a few cents per ML, how much money are you saving by risking having worse adhesion at the edges and the rubber starts peeling at the edges after a few sessions?
