I was aware, that pro´s use their fingers while doing topspins but i was never sure what they meant, or how to do it. Maybe what I am going to talk about is different but the quality of the ball is so much better.
So what I discovered for me while doing a TT Trainer certification is that apparently on forehand top spins you don´t put pressure with your thumb and index finger but just your index finger and you can do it before or while hitting the ball. I tried in training and the fell of the Top Spin is off the charts, feels and is a lot more spin and quality. Another pro for me is that it keeps the blade angle more open decreases the chance of hitting the blade edge.

Basically as TT is all about spin, the fingers have to also act to "spin" the ball. This also depends on how you grip the racket and where your fingers are positioned on the blade face. So it can be a highly individual thing.

For e.g. for me i use the 2nd joint of the index finger (if you count 1st as the joint connecting finger and palm) and the other 4 fingers gripping to assist forearm pronation, and all of these actions have direct line of force to rotate the blade anticlockwise with the effect of closing the blade angle.

I find that pressing on the index fingertip produces suboptimal outcomes for me.
