They say that there is a gap between stimulus and response. And that you get to choose how you use that gap.

For myself, often my go-to single thought is "if he thinks he needs to resort to mind games or underhand tactics, he probably thinks he doesn't have the game to beat me straight". Then I put out of my mind whatever utterance or event that took place and refocus on the next point. A bit like the thought process Robin Williams describes in the park scene between Robin Williams and Matt Damon in the movie "Good Will Hunting".

Irrespective of whatever else you do (stoic or otherwise), the best response is to win the next point. In most cases I find that if I win the next two points, then the cracks open up. And I have cracked it with good table tennis. Sometimes when I lose a match I feel grumpy. I'm still working on that.
