Lin is probably having problem with his wrist and elbow according to the tape. These kind of injuries usually take long for treatment and revover. I'm thinking he should have done the withdrawn with injury reason, then would there be penalty or not?
Lin chose to rest and train for Olympics, which is 6 weeks from now
He used up his 2 x withdraw to come back to Taiwan and recover and restart.
He had a very tiring year so far and indeed injury on the wrist is getting worse due to overloading of tournaments, as this 6 months has been overloading for every player. The most overload 6 month period since 2020.

I'm not sure if he used medical withdrawal or not. But medical withdrawal is very strict and with few cases in 2023 and 2024, we have seen players getting declined - this includes Aruna and Ni, being the more famous incidents.

Do players allow to choose what tournament they want to play? Or if wtt send the invitation, they're forced to play? That's shitty to see how wtt is doing with players now.
With WTT policy, players get automatically entered and then the players need to withdraw themselves if they can't or don't want to play.

they are only allowed 2 withdrawal for personal reasons.
Now, personal reasons also includes financial reasons.....

So imagine a self funding player, who all of the sudden have no more money to tour.... then that player will get few fines and penalties....

This is crazy, especially financial reason is a valid problem in the sport. If WTT make it free for automatic entry players to fly, and play (no USD150~180 daily cost), then financial reason is off the cards, but it cost players daily fee for say min 5 days or at least 750USD per person + what ever flight cost. Assuming just 1 player and no one else. Prize money can't contribute to this overhead.

WTT Contender Zagreb winner - 5000USD, R16 - 775USD, R32 - 525USD
Kanak spend min 2 to 3 nights + maybe extra of 2 days prior - so 5 nights, to win 0 USD at Star Contender.
If he had made it into maindraw, he would get 900USD prize money and still not break even.
remember - prize money still need to be taxed with withholding tax... lol

I can't remember where I saw the chart before, but the only way out is for women's - maternity leave, or both men and women - medical, or file for official international retirement.
The rest is all personal reason - ie, if you getting married, or honeymoon, all that is personal reason and only 2 x per year (not sure if calendar year now, or 12 month cycle), but there is over 10~20 events a year, so players need to play in 80~90% of them to avoid penalty and fines.

This is why some players have chosen to go play and loose 1st match and can return home.
This is terrible solution and also against WTT policy, so if they got caught, then that is fines/penalty too.
But you need to be there, but you also don't want to be there... it is very very difficult for players.

In junior circuit, there isn't force or withdrawal issue.
but it is the same daily costs, but some times the accommodation is shocking - ie, staying in school dorm and not hotel.
imagine paying USD160 a night (including transport and 3 meals), and you staying in a school dorm.
Before WTT, the average budget for tours in say Europe through ITTF hotel + transport is around USD100 per day.
so 60% more today, but quality from 4 star living to 1 star...

This fee is forced for both seniors and juniors WTT events!!
the entry fee + hotel (or dorm) + transport is together. You either pay it or you don't take part.

so think about it, where an avg of 6 days (some times 10 days) x 150 USD x 120 players.
this is a good USD110k in entry fees min per event hosted.
More realistic is 8 day stay x 160~180 x 200+ players = USD300K

So when you have 30 youth events a year and 35 senior events a year.
so 30 x 110k + 35 x 300k = this is atleast 12 million USD a year just on entry fees just for singles.

This is why many national federations have said WTT has become a business.
and players are the tools for making this business successful and they don't get paid for "arriving to the job"

In 2023, this is the table for penalty

1718439887117.png

In March 2024 here is the update.

1718439860208.png

So, if Lin's punishment is correct from ITTF then this is why:
March 2024, when the new rules kicked in, and if Lin had withdrawals in say 2nd half of 2023, then his withdrawals in May/June of 2024 is deemed 3rd or more.....

so here is what Lin took part in the past 12 months: 15 events, while his 16th event (Zagreb) gave him penalty.
Note, the date is expiry date - so just change the year to 1 year earlier for an idea of competition date.
Lin skipped mixed team world cup and i'm not sure at this moment which is the other tournament he skipped.

Note, the new rule of 12 month period came into affect in March 2024.

Who feels the rules are soft? and who feels the rules are too harsh?

So, I had a long chat with a friend who works with WTT and is very clued up on the matters here.
He will also insure communication is made to the public on this matter.

Smash, Champion, Finals is the only "mandatory"
Automatic Entry is separate

the 2 x withdrawal (which I told him is not enough and needs to be more) is only for the mandatory.

The issue with Lin (and another player) is still on going.
what happened with Lin of what I know is:

1) he entered (unnecessary) to the contender/star contender,
2) and then when he saw the points for Paris is kind of set + he wanted to rest (same as another player)
3) they both withdraw,
4) the ZPP came as a surprise
5) if both the players knew there are penalties, they would have played.

measures are in place to make sure communication and education is better, since withdrawal is not applicable at this event, so the entry + withdraw with penalty came to be. (the players didn't know, so they withdrawal again).

Another issue is - players do things through the national federation (MA), as the MA is the only point of reference for WTT. This makes it lagging and wrong message delivered or delayed.

It is probably a good case study for ALL pros, MA and WTT/ITTF to learn from.

The future of WTT looks like this for the elites

5 to 6 Champions (say 5)
4 Smash
1 Finals (if they make it)
so 10 events a year (of which 2 withdraw - I said it is too little).

Then ITTF
World Cup
World Champ
Mixed Team WC
so 3 events a year

Then continental champ + cup
2 event a year

so far we at 15 events a year.

Then maybe the elites can choose to take part in certain Star Contenders, or contender.
reckon not more than 1 or 2 of each, to not get to the 20 event a year mark (overloading)

We haven't include any other tournaments ie - qualifications to the Olympics for example, which happens every 4 years.

We haven't included any club or national events.

The only good thing is, WTT wants to fix the schedule for the big ones (10 events) and the ITTF ones should be known earlier too (3 events), so the 13 events for Elites, should be known a lot earlier and better for planning/scheduling.

I argued that peaking/performance, mental health on players need to be measured.
I still believe the 10 + 3 + 2 +what ever contender, is way overloading in a 12 month period.

I have seen many players look drained and not in the correct mental stage and needs the plain and simple - rest.

having said that,
Star Contender and Container points will be opened up to the rest of the top 100s.
So you are bound to see an influx of "points" from say, tier 2 elites.

To all of that WTT there is only one word for it: outrageous!!!
If they think they can make our sport popular with this...
If you remove club or other minute competition, for the elite it is possible to do something never done before.

they just need to make sure the prize money is higher
and all costs (for champion, smash, final) is incurred by WTT, other than traveling expense.
and hopefully with all those in that category get sponsored to travel by they own sponsors or country, all income from prize money is pocketed (less withholding tax)

so if elite just play 10 (less 2 for withdrawal), + ITTF 3 + Con 3, that is about 14 a year.
and if they play no more and can earn lots of money - then maybe, WTT has made it like Tennis.

I asked for a players price money winning calculator, that would be a web version coming soon.... so lets see how good it can be, without draining the elites few.

For the rest of the bunch, I didn't ask how many SC or Contender is left. But of a 52 week year... there is going to be full loading for every WTT staff and player in the coming years.

I didn't ask - how would the fans keep up to date (since someone mentioned it last time).
I am struggling to keep up on youth and seniors now.

No Hugo in Lagos and Tunis
No Quadri in Lagos
Both with an injury.
Instagram_WTT
everyone plays with injury (I doubt if there is a single player in the world top 100 that is injury free).

if the event is no longer a necessity, (which to me, Paris OG seeding is now all set, all these events is therefore pretty much unnecessary), there is no need for players to risk further (point-risk-bigger tournament ahead etc).

so, the "2nd tiers" can have fun eating up the ranking points.

I would have thought Quadri would want to win Lagos though (he sure needs the points).....

and as per LYJ case, the best option is to pull out with injury.
Since, once you entered, there is no other way to pull out without facing zpp and fines.

2 x (free) withdrawal is not permitted for mandatory events!!
only withdrawal allowed is illness or injury.

WTT is a non sustainable business model. You can't have mandatory participation when most of the mandatory players are going to lose $$$ by playing. This is a joke. This heavily favors players from countries with big budgets.

This works in tennis because a mandatory player is guaranteed a payout.

At a Masters 1000 mandatory tennis event like Indian Wells, the total prize money is almost $18 million. A mandatory player who loses their first match will still make over $30k in prize money.

the mandatory - Smash, Champion etc, have all cost covered. players cost is to pay for flights to get there.

you are right that big budget players will have no problem, because they can have flights covered, costs of coaches covered etc.

and I also feel you are right that the guarantee payout for 1st round losers, is not attractive enough, especially you must cover your flights and your time (your salary) and possible other cost relating to training and health (coach, trainer, medical staff).

Aruna is outside that major payout (which includes many other players too), and other than a handful of countries, most of them do not have big budget.
So I do believe the experience and sentiment is with many players

Solution from WTT is to increase the prize money for first rounders and I think that is what they are trying to do.

Sports are scam
for sports people, we call it sports

for business people, it is called entertainment and there is profits and there is loss.
table tennis is not an easy busy...
if it wasn't for self funding of players, WTT participation (senior and junior) would decease by a hefty percentage and there would be no entertainment what so ever.

So, I feel, for WTT and ITTF to be successful, players need to have regular income, and this is what the leagues can give players that WTT/ITTF can't.

they need to find a structure that players can both play domestic leagues as well as international competition.
in the case for many sport codes, domestic leagues are bigger than international, except for say tennis, golf.
