Even the editorial of Table Tennis Kingdom is mad about the current "spineless" JTTA. As I've repeatedly pointed out, there is hardly any team morale.

今日6月8日、ロサンゼルス五輪の日本代表候補選手選考基準が日本卓球協会から発表された。
ロサンゼルス五輪の卓球競技は以下の種目が実施される。
■混合団体：男女各3名（計6名）
■男子シングルス（2名）／女子シングルス（2名）
■男子ダブルス（1ペア）／女子ダブルス（1ペア）
■混合ダブルス（1～2ペア）
日本代表は男女最大3名ずつ。2028年1月3日発表予定の世界ランキングをもとに男女シングルスの各2名が選ばれ、さらに団体戦（混合団体）用に3番目の選手が選出される。男女ダブルスおよび混合ダブルスには、この3名の中でのペアリングを考慮して割り振られる形だ。
これまで協会の理事会後ブリーフィングでも、「ITTF（国際卓球連盟）やIOC（国際オリンピック委員会）から混合団体などの競技方法が発表されてから、選考基準を発表する」と繰り返し説明されてきた。しかし結局、強化本部はITTFやIOCの発表を待たずに選考基準を公表することとなった。今回の発表で重要なのは、日本代表（シングルスおよび3番目の選手）が2028年1月（3番目の選手は2月にずれ込む可能性もあり）に決定するということだ。
この内容は、メディアが詰めかけた6月6日の理事会ですでに承認されていた事項である。その日のブリーフィングで発表していれば、メディア側もその場で質問を重ねられたはずだが、それも叶わなかった。東京五輪以降、強化本部の発信力の弱さを痛感せざるを得ない。
また、その理事会の際、卓球王国として「世界選手権が終わり、強化本部として総括ミーティングは行ったのか？ 行ったのであれば、今後の日本の強化方針はどうなるのか？」と質問をぶつけた。 これに対する馬場美香・強化本部長の回答は、「総括会議はまだ行っておりません。両監督とスケジュールを調整し、7月に行います。出席するのは各カテゴリーの監督と、大会に帯同したスタッフです」というものだった。
中国では昔から、世界選手権やオリンピックが終わると帰国後すぐに監督やコーチ陣、時には各省の監督らを北京に集めて総括会議を行うことで知られている。
WTTの上位大会がなかった5月のうちに、日本も行うべきではなかったか。あまりに遅い動き出しと言わざるを得ない。中国との「本気度」の違いを指摘されても、弁解の余地はないだろう。

(Today, June 8th, the Japan Table Tennis Association announced the selection criteria for Japanese national team candidates for the Los Angeles Olympics.
The table tennis competition at the Los Angeles Olympics will include the following events:
■ Mixed Team: 3 men and 3 women (6 total)
■ Men's Singles (2 players) / Women's Singles (2 players)
■ Men's Doubles (1 pair) / Women's Doubles (1 pair)
■ Mixed Doubles (1-2 pairs)
The Japanese national team will consist of a maximum of 3 men and 3 women. Based on the world rankings, which are scheduled to be announced on January 3rd, 2028, two men and two women will be selected for singles, and a third player will be selected for the team competition (mixed team). The men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles will be allocated considering pairings among these 3 players.
Previously, the association repeatedly explained in post-board briefings that "the selection criteria will be announced after the ITTF (International Table Tennis Federation) and IOC (International Olympic Committee) announce the competition methods for events such as the mixed team." However, the Strengthening Headquarters ultimately decided to announce the selection criteria without waiting for the ITTF or IOC's announcement. The important point of this announcement is that the Japanese national team (singles and the third player) will be decided in January 2028 (the third player may be delayed until February).
This information had already been approved at the board meeting on June 6th, which was attended by many media outlets. If it had been announced at the briefing that day, the media could have asked numerous questions, but this was not possible.
Since the Tokyo Olympics, the Strengthening Headquarters' lack of communication skills has been painfully apparent.
Furthermore, at that board meeting, as a representative Table Tennis Kingdom asked, "Have the Strengthening Headquarters held a summary meeting since the World Championships ended? If so, what will be the future strengthening policy for Japan?" Strengthening Headquarters Director Mika Baba's response was, "We have not yet held a summary meeting. We will coordinate the schedule with both coaches and hold it in July. Attendees will be the coaches from each category and the staff who accompanied the tournament."
In China, it's long been known that after the World Championships and Olympics, coaches, staff, and sometimes even coaches from each province gather in Beijing for a debriefing session upon returning home.
Shouldn't Japan have held a similar meeting in May, when there were no top-tier WTT competitions? This is an undeniably slow start.
There's no room for excuses when criticized for the difference in "seriousness" between Japan and China.
