Do you mean the pros? If you are, then I'll say because they're really good :) When we reached a certain level, 99.99% of our serves will be returned. The trick is how to make our serve safe so that our opponents can't go into offense immediately and put us on the back foot. At that level, a nice short low serve is good enough, but more emphasis should be given to receiving of serves.

Yes I should have said pros, but in past times the serve dominated more, even though there were excellent talented players who had great control.

Oh yeah...in the ol' days yes. Each of us gets to serve 5 times. And the ball was smaller. Smaller balls means greater rotations, higher spins. Not to mention we get to hide the balls hehehe Not so much now. The advantage of serving has been taken out quite considerably.

actually, i think that you'll find the pros do win most of the points on their serve, they just dont win points straight from serve.
example was the 7th game samsonov- zhang jike, where zhang won 2 points on vladi's serve and vladi won one point on zhang's serve.i would say the top pros probably win about 85% of points when they serve.
however, when we went to watch the women play, it was different- quite a lot of the women misread serves, which sucks...but the womens game is different and i would say the serve is less important, just like in tennis for the women lol :p
