How about an edge detector that senses side table contact?

Two untested ideas:
1. run a long tension string along the side for vibration sensing.
2. run a piezoelectric ribbon along the side

I'm all for piezo electric, we use them to mike upright basses, electro-acoustic basses or electro-acoustic guitars, they work very well and can transcribe any variation possible. I'd better use a coppolymer piezo electric fiber like Arkema makes; basically you could run a piezoelectric fiber all along the net upper from side to side. then you just put a led inside the net posts, both side for both umpire and referee.
