Who defeated adidas Table Tennis?
2015-08-11 13:33·Ping Pang Magazine

One day in May this year, the sales manager of a table tennis equipment distributor in Shenyang placed a futures order for clothing with Hangzhou Kangqun Trading Co., Ltd., the exclusive general distributor of Adidas Table Tennis in China, as usual, to reserve inventory for daily sales.

But soon, the other party replied that the company decided not to accept futures orders for the time being, and the specific reason was unknown. Many unfavorable rumors about Adidas Table Tennis's withdrawal from the market have been circulated in the industry: the office location of the Beijing branch responsible for promotion and sales was withdrawn, and the office location of the Hangzhou head office was also moved from the development zone to a more remote place... Internal employees have successively received news of job-hopping and resignation. After entering the Chinese market for less than six years, is it really going to "close down"? The relevant personnel of Adidas Table Tennis neither confirmed nor denied these rumors.

At 18:36 on July 28, Huang Mao, the business manager of Adidas Table Tennis China, updated his WeChat Moments: "After thinking it over, I would like to make a statement here: Adidas' German headquarters believes that the input and output are not proportional... So the two sides decided to stop cooperation by the end of the year, which means the cessation of the table tennis project..."

Although it is not an official statement, this personal statement also makes the other "boot" that has been rumored for a long time fall to the ground. Both the contracted dealers and the table tennis equipment industry seem to have accepted this fact calmly. An industry insider told the reporter of "Ping Pang": "Adidas Table Tennis has had many problems for a long time..." It seems that everyone has been mentally prepared.

What exactly is wrong with Adidas Table Tennis? Why did it stop in a hurry after entering the market for less than 6 years? Why did Adidas, an invincible global sports brand, fail in the table tennis equipment market?

Since December 2009, it has been the first to launch table tennis products in the European market. At the Munich Sporting Goods Show in January 2010, Adidas announced to the world for the first time that it would enter the table tennis equipment market. This news, in the eyes of mass market marketing professionals, is another step forward on the basis of its diversified product strategy! And for the field of table tennis equipment, it is undoubtedly a big crocodile that suddenly broke into the small pond, and it is "famous" and "rich"!

But Adidas Table Tennis emphasized that they came to China with the mission of "innovation" to bring a new sports experience to the vast number of table tennis fans. "Adidas is not here to divide the market, but to make the market bigger." An industry insider explained the meaning of "bigger" to the reporter of "Ping Pang": Adidas Table Tennis "focuses" not on the market of professional table tennis equipment, but on the leisure table tennis products commonly known as "finished rackets" in the industry, and hopes to make a difference in the field of leisure table tennis.

The person in charge of Zhongshan Fengji, which is well-known in the field of table tennis equipment, once told the reporter of Ping Pang that professional blades only account for about 8% of its annual output, and the rest are "finished rackets". In the view of Adidas, there is no strong brand that can compete with it in this blue ocean field. The industry insider also holds a positive view on this, "Adidas's vision is correct, but it has taken the wrong path!"

The so-called "wrong path" is because Adidas Table Tennis chose to take its first step in the field of professional equipment.

The consideration of the "first step" is actually in line with Adidas' previous development in various sports fields: signing well-known players and sponsoring top events in the field. Through the excellent performance of the professional market in this field, it affects the wider mass leisure market.

According to this strategy of Adidas, the market share of its products in related fields should be ranked among the top three. In the table tennis industry, the "Butterfly" brand of Japan's Temasu Company has always firmly occupied the top spot in the world. Although the second and third ranked brands in Europe, Japan, South Korea and other places are slightly different, they are undoubtedly old brands that have been deeply involved in the field of table tennis equipment for decades. In the minds of consumers, although Adidas is a "big" brand, they trust these "old-fashioned" companies more for professional equipment. Adidas Table Tennis, which came with a silver spoon in its mouth, failed to pay enough attention to these "lightweight" opponents in terms of brand value and market value.

Perhaps it was felt that it was easy to operate a table tennis project compared to football and basketball. Adidas authorized a Taiwanese company that had never been involved in the field of table tennis equipment as the operator of the project. But just in case, while collecting high royalties, it set up many restrictive clauses, and "dancing in shackles" also laid the groundwork for Adidas Table Tennis to reach the end in just 6 years.

According to Adidas' "strategy", in the agreement with the contracted dealers, Adidas Table Tennis requires that the equipment account for 70% of the categories purchased by the dealers. "Shoes and clothing are Adidas' strengths, and there is no worry about sales. So, of course, we hope that everyone will promote more equipment products." A person who worked for Adidas Table Tennis in the early days told the reporter of "Ping Pang". In the eyes of industry insiders, this move is undoubtedly Adidas's use of its own shortcomings to compete in the market.

Mr. Matsbang Destingen, CEO of the Stiga brand, once emphasized in an interview with the reporter of "Ping Pang" that Chinese table tennis equipment consumers are the most picky. For this reason, after receiving the goods, the Chinese branch has been more and more strict in selecting the appearance of the bottom plate year by year. But when the first batch of Adidas Table Tennis bottom plate series products were delivered to the contracted dealers, a dealer who did not want to be named said: "It is hard to imagine that a large number of blades with uneven surface materials and handle thickness are produced by Adidas."

The troubles of the contracted dealers are not difficult to answer. At the beginning of its establishment, Adidas Table Tennis did not have its own product development team, but referring to the successful experience in other fields, they found two well-known companies in the field of table tennis equipment development and production for "OEM" processing.

However, unlike the extremely strong and mature OEM standardized processing model of Adidas headquarters, the production of table tennis baseboards cannot be completely separated from the presence of craftsmen. The various intricacies in this process are obviously not a problem that Adidas Table Tennis can solve by just spending production fees.

As a result, Adidas' first baseboard series of table tennis products suffered a Waterloo. The head of this well-known OEM company in the industry told the reporter of "Ping Pang" that he had expected this situation a long time ago. Before the delivery of this batch of products, he specifically asked the other party whether this batch of products would be sold to China or Europe? He also emphasized to the other party that this batch of products could not be sold in the Chinese market. However, in the end, the sales location of this batch of goods was still China.

It seems that Adidas Table Tennis rubber products are luckier. The rubber products of Adidas Table Tennis are commissioned by the German ESN company to produce. After years of publicity by many brands such as German Donic, Euler, Andu and Korean Jiaomeng, ESN has become a golden signboard for the performance of table tennis rubbers. According to an interview with Ping Pang, Adidas Table Tennis, with its brand advantage, has been treated as a Class A customer of ESN, although it started cooperating with ESN much later than the previous brands. This also ensures that Adidas Table Tennis rubber products have certain competitive strength in terms of performance. Unfortunately, Adidas Table Tennis did not mention ESN in the promotion of its rubber products. "The German headquarters does not allow it!" A staff member of the marketing department of Adidas Table Tennis once replied to the Ping Pang reporter. In the eyes of Adidas, unless it is a new technology developed by its own company, nothing else can be promoted, let alone "promotion" for OEM companies. Therefore, when all brands are trying their best to promote their own product "selling points", Adidas Table Tennis rubber products are pushed to the market with a "cold" attitude. In the absence of official promotion, even some contracted dealers did not know that this batch of rubbers with good performance were produced by ESN.

[continuing from previous post]

The subsequent product logistics problems made the dealers even more troubled.

The Adidas brand table tennis table PRO800, launched in early 2010, was unveiled at the Munich Sporting Goods Show in January of the same year. It was the highest level in the industry and was successfully signed as the designated table for the Berlin Table Tennis Open in March of the same year. Although the PRO800 table, which is purely imported from Germany, costs five figures, it has been tested in the German Open and has the Adidas brand, so many dealers are looking forward to using it to make a big splash. But what no one expected was that such an expensive foreign treasure was already a "defective product" when it was delivered to the contracted dealer. It turns out that in Germany, the place of origin, logistics and transportation is basically a complete mechanized process. The simple and environmentally friendly packaging designed by Adidas Table Tennis for PRO800 is both beautiful and can cope with long-distance travel. But once it enters China, the violent disassembly and assembly of traditional logistics directly makes the product unrecognizable. The two brands of Double Happiness and Double Fish, which occupy the main market of table tennis tables in China, are particularly strong in product packaging, fully anticipating the damage to the product during logistics and handling. Moreover, the product is easy to disassemble and assemble, and a clerk can complete the installation in a short time. However, PRO800 not only needs to refer to the manual from time to time during installation, but even a skilled installer needs two people to operate for nearly 4 hours.

The "bad start" of the equipment category has poured cold water on the initial confidence of the contracted dealers, and everyone began to expect to open up the situation from the "foolproof" footwear and clothing products.

Adidas Table Tennis footwear and clothing products adopt the futures ordering method, that is, the contracted dealers reserve the number of products after seeing the samples. Most of the contracted dealers are full of confidence in this, but when the clothing products arrived one after another, they were dumbfounded. It turned out that when everyone placed an order, they did not know that the relevant product models were European standards, because even foreign brands such as Stiga, Donic, and Euler, the products sold in the Chinese market are also marked with Asian models. According to the previous sales norms, group purchases of table tennis professional clothing accounted for about 80% of the dealers' shipments, and a full range of sizes is often the most critical factor in whether a deal can be made. Due to the size problem, the group purchase volume was severely compressed. "As a result, a 2XL jersey is probably only suitable for Yao Ming. It is also difficult to sell at retail. How many table tennis players can wear such a large size?" Therefore, the first batch of Adidas Table Tennis professional clothing is mostly piled up in the warehouses of dealers. Since then, problems such as product version, style, unstable delivery cycle, etc. have always become the topic of "denunciation" by contracted dealers at every order meeting. "How can a big brand like Adidas have problems with these issues?" A contracted dealer complained.

Adidas, which operates well in the mass sports goods market, has repeatedly made mistakes that dealers think are "primary" in the table tennis market.

Generally speaking, product deficiencies will not lead to a strong and well-known brand's rapid decline as long as they can be adjusted and corrected in time. In fact, after introducing more table tennis professionals in 2011, Adidas' performance in the professional equipment product market has indeed improved greatly. If the marketing promotion and marketing are successfully promoted during the same period, the results may be completely different.

Signing top athletes and national teams, sponsoring top events in related fields, these marketing methods commonly used by sports brands have immediate effects on improving product sales in this field.

Unfortunately, several major events hosted by the International Table Tennis Federation have already been "taken" early, and Hangzhou Kangqun Trading Co., Ltd., which is only authorized to operate the table tennis project, has to do "detailed accounting". The sales performance is not optimistic, and the investment in promotion has become cautious.

A staff member who used to be responsible for marketing at Adidas Table Tennis told the reporter of "Table Tennis" that some of the early sponsorship and promotion were completely made in response to the "headquarters' requirements", and the market reaction and effect were not within the scope of consideration. Therefore, we observed that in 2011, Adidas sponsored the 2011 ITTF Youth Tour (Chengdu Station). In the absence of television broadcasts and media attention, the marketing effect can be imagined; afterwards, in order to cooperate with the "headquarters" to develop the youth market, in May 2012, it sponsored the Capital University Table Tennis Championship and the "Principal Cup" Table Tennis Competition. These competitions are rarely paid attention to by local table tennis enthusiasts, and the response of commercial sponsorship can be imagined.

In early 2011, when many top domestic and foreign players had contracts, adidas could only sign sponsorship contracts with two table tennis players ranked in the top ten at the time: Feng Tianwei (ranked second in the world) and Li Jiao (ranked tenth in the world). In the field of table tennis equipment, the impact of male and female players on the market is very different. Therefore, Adidas's heavy signing of table tennis this time is considered "not cost-effective" by many industry insiders.

More importantly, unlike mass consumer goods, for table tennis consumers, whether players actually use the brand's equipment after signing the contract is the top priority. However, the "tricky" Chinese consumers soon discovered that Feng Tianwei did not use Adidas equipment in the competition. Even when participating in the team competition, she did not wear Adidas Table Tennis uniforms because the Singapore national team was sponsored by a related brand.

Is Adidas Table Tennis really willing to be a "sucker"? Just sign an image contract? In fact, in order to let Feng Tianwei use the Adidas Table Tennis bottom plate, the Adidas Table Tennis team has worked hard, hoping that their contracted players can use their own products as soon as possible. After several twists and turns, the performance and design finally got Feng Tianwei's approval, and she also exposed the new bottom plate named after her on Weibo. But facing the pressure of the upcoming Olympics, under the persuasion of relevant people, Feng Tianwei, who was hesitant, finally decided not to change the equipment before the 2012 Olympics. This decision also became one of the reasons why Adidas Table Tennis did not renew its contract with it.

Ping Pang reporter learned in an interview that Adidas Table Tennis had once planned to sponsor the Table Tennis Super League, but just before the signing of the agreement, it was "taken away" by a domestic national brand with a higher sponsorship amount; the sponsorship of shoes with the Chinese National Table Tennis Team also fell through for various reasons.

No stars, no major event sponsorship. Adidas Table Tennis' performance in marketing left everyone with the impression that it was very un-"Adidas".

In the eyes of industry insiders, it was Adidas itself that really pushed Adidas Table Tennis to the finish line. Huang Mao, business manager of adidas Table Tennis China, said: "The cost, time and process of developing a pair of table tennis shoes are the same as a pair of basketball and running shoes, but the sales volume is very different. In addition, with the merger with tennis this year, Adidas has shifted its focus to tennis, which has been in the market for many years.
