I’m considering a new rubber setup and deciding between Sanwei Hyper Gear and Sanwei Target National for my forehand. I play tournaments at an intermediate level, focusing on an offensive style with a mix of spin, speed, and control.

  • Which of these two would be better for forehand?
  • For backhand, would either of these work, or are there better budget-friendly alternatives?
The blade I’m considering is DHS PG5X. Would these rubbers pair well with it, or should I look at other options?

I’m on a tight budget as a student, so I’d appreciate suggestions that offer the best value. Looking forward to your recommendations!

for FH, I would recommend Double Fish Volant or Big Dipper. Arthur China is good too

Yeah, I’ve tried Big Dipper 39 on yinhe N10s Blade, but I struggled to get powerful, spinning shots—my opponent was able to counter them easily. As for the other rubbers, I haven’t tried them, but from reviews, it seems they need to be boosted.

Are there any other rubbers that don’t require boosting but still offer good spin and power? Also, what would you recommend for backhand?

Intermediate level, Gear Hyper is more suitable . It is more like Euro Rubber with less catapult, not sticky. Target National is a low throw Chinese rubber like H3. It needs more skill and arm pull to activate the hard sponge.

When you've played with Big Dipper and couldn't generate enough spin, you'll generate even less spin with Gear Hyper.

Then you don't use full body movement like Chinese rubbers demands. Perhaps the Gear Hyper could be better for you compared to Big Dipper then. Other rubbers that might suit you that are a bit faster than Big Dipper are these.

Yinhe - Moon Speed 53 Euro M+
729 - Presto MAX Spin/Speed
Giant Dragon - TopEnergy Soft/Hard
Yinhe - Moon 12 Blue H-/H+
LOKI - Telson 100
Pimplepark - Attaxx Speed

All these are very grippy and I think they would suit you better as you might not use full body movement and close your bat angle that much.

I’ve tried Target 3 National Blue Sponge, it’s really nice. I’ve heard negative comments about gear hyper, and Target being cheaper too makes it a better deal.

Compared to Volant, target 3 National is spinnier, Volant is faster. Target has more spin than Volant. Throw angle is lower for target. Volant feels faster, more like European rubbers than Target. Honestly I prefer Target 3 National Blue Sponge on forehand more than commercial DHS H3 Neo orange sponge, and cheaper too.

They're quite different rubbers with different aims so it's not really to say which is 'better'. The Gear Hyper is a high control semi-tacky rubber with enough speed to play offensively and isn't too bouncy either. It's not a particularly fast rubber and it's not one you'd use to defend either - it sits firmly in the middle with great balance to help direct play. So if you continually play aggressively, it's perhaps not quite the rubber for you.

The Target National is a hard, very tacky, very low throw rubber that is capable of very dangerous shots that are hard to return. In exchange, it also requires more precision to use effectively. You'd need a faster swing and can't really do lazy shots or make effective returns when you're out of position (The Gear Hyper is better for this). It's a high durable rubber despite the top sheet getting easily marked.

Ultimately, which rubber is 'better' depends on your play style and what you're looking to get in your gameplay.

imo, the blade is the problem. I've had my time with the N10s, it's alright for practice purpose but in matches its performance isn't well at all considering a 5-ply structure, not to mention lower wood quality
