I don't know much about the history of Werner. Did he use to be significantly better or is he in his prime now? I simply don't know much about him.

Nah, Schlager was in his prime from like 1999-2004 or so, I am not really sure, but during that period he won the world championships, and also beat Boll in the Olympics. Back then, he was able to use his unique playstyle to its utmost advantage, and usually beat Boll in their matchups. Now Schlager is getting old and can't do a lot of the stuff that made him good as consistently.

Ok yeah for the olympics, but no to the WTTC. The WTTC is every 2 years, and its on the odd year, so there wasn't even a wttc in 2006. Wang Liqin won in 2001, Shlager won in 2003, and then 2005 and 2007 was Wang Liqin again

He is also my favourite player, although his standard is dwindling his form lives on in video. I just love his clever aggression, his backhand is insane! Sometimes his touch play reminds me of Waldner, though on rarer occasions :p

I used to really dislike Schlager, because his strokes look so odd and ugly, and his facial expression made it seem like he was always angry or just peculiar, but after a while, I really like the fact that he uses his brains a lot while playing, and his tactics are really good. In terms of the european players, he is probably one of the more cerebral players, while Boll, isn't that cerebral but just tries to get the as much spin on each shot as possible.

I especially liked Schlager's interview that was posted on some other thread

Or maybe you dislike him because he could defeat Wang Liqin back then ;)
Naah JK, yessir he is the brainer..

It was cool when he won the World Championships. He has great serves and an amazing backhand. Very solid and powerful even though he moves awkwardly. I usually like the stylish players: Ma Long, Kong Linghui, Wang Liqin, Waldner. But it is hard not to like Schlager. He is great.
