Losing 3-0 to Xu Haidong, but OP say he's crazy good? He also lost 4-2 to Quek Izaac at the 2025 Youth Singapore Smash. Hmmm... I'm not convinced. Well, he is young and will need time to develop. Definitely good, but may end up hidden behind his compatriots.

Quek Izaac strong player. It's not shame to lose to him for player on Sun Yang level

As long as male and female short pip modern defenders continue to emerge from rival nations, he will have the opportunity to keep developing within CNT.
No one doubts that. But not as a Frontline player. Ask all the girls that used pips.

Well if he beats everyone to a pulp, he will be used as a frontline player. Unfortunately, pips can't do that.

Ahem, if I'm constantly reminded how Matsushima's terrible losses can be pardoned/dismissed because of age, then the same standard should be applied to Sun Yang.

how many short pip modern defenders emerge from rival nations?
I hardly see short pip choppers outside China

No shame at all. I only use Quek for reference as another young player. He's lost to some young Japanese players as well at the 2024 Asian Youth Championships. He's a very good player, but "crazy good" belongs to players like Ma Long, FZD, and LSD (even when they were young to make the comparison fair). For a while, he was the top junior from China, but as they aged and got stronger, his peers overtook him iirc.

Yuto Muramatsu for sure.

Han Ying and Wang Yang are Chinese by birth but have been mainstays in the rankings representing other nations.

It would be malpractice for CNT not to try to develop at least 1 top level chopper to cover off all bases with their resources.

The Japanese women’s doubles pair are interesting as they are known to use medium pips Do Knuckle.

Is anybody understand why Kai Zhang got third set? He was losing 9:10, lost point and after he argued with umpire score become 11:9 for him
It almost always means a point was counted wrong previously and missed by the players until they looked at the score board. You just have to look over game 3 and find the point.

Obviously, that's the problem. He would have to be a really special talent and stop chopping so much to make it happen (either hit with the pips more or twiddle a lot more on attacks). And developing those skills takes time and there are only limited training hours in a day to spend on something that takes time from other things.

My issue has little to do with age, much more to do with pips, on the age front, I am pretty patient, but let's remember that Yuto was also a beast as a junior. Sun Yang is still clearly in development, my issues have little to do with his results. I am focused much more on his competition within the team.

It was all related to the point at 1-1 2-2. The refs said that Sun Yang's shot hit the edge however both players thought it missed. Therefore, when the listed score was 10-8, it "should" have been 9-9. Kai won the next two points, so it "should" have been 11-9 but the scoreboard and refs were saying 10-10. Kai was demanding to watch the replay, but eventually both Kai and Sun Yang said that the earlier shot did not hit the edge, even though both refs thought that it did. So, since both players agreed, 11-9 to Kai.

Either way, seems like Sun Yang recovered mentally from the long break better, as he dominated the next two games.
