Which foam sponge do you use to apply glue?

I love the sponges that comes with the DHS no. 15 (500ml) bottle but I ran out and bought blocks of these sponges that aren’t cut the same size so I can save money. I tried using an exacto knife to cut it the same size and even used scissors but I can’t get seem to get a clean cut rectangle. Are there any methods to cut this clean and straight? Because of this, the layer of glue isn’t even and see some streaks

I'm not sure how to cut it well but what I do is I use the sponge then I just cut off the bottom where the old dried glue is. So I can use a DHS or Sueke sponge like 4-5 times. Because of this I have 2-3 extra bags of sponges since the sponge outlasts the bottle of glue easily. And it's very easy to just cut off a few centimeters of sponge after use each time. So I didn't answer your question but maybe in the future you can do this too.

Oh wow, that is some great advice! Will do this next time when I get those DHS sponges. Btw, always wondered what does flat black rectangle hard sponges that comes with it also?

I use the cylindrical sponge from Aliexpress. When cutting sponge the corners/edges always stick out a bit, resulting in streaks when applying glue, so I don't bother with it.

You can wash the glue off of the white sponges that come with the 500ml bottle of No15, you just can't let it dry first or else it will clump and ruin the sponge. Just run it under water and squeeze out the excess glue

Interesting... I always cut off small pieces to fit in the clip but streaks haven't been a problem. Maybe I have a delicate touch :sneaky:

I just take a pair of scissors and do one big straight snip.
It's a soft sponge, when you cut it with a scissor the middle gets compressed, so the edges end up slightly longer than the center, at least that's been my experience.

You can buy a bag of those cylindrical sponges inexpensively that even come with a clip from most table tennis places. No messing about with cutting or reuse necessary. I like to get pro results in rubber setup and am not so poor that I need to resort to caveman DIY techniques.

Britt from OKC club gave me this advice a long time ago and it was great. I don't use a lot of latex glue but I do need it on a few rubbers. He turned me on to some foam insulation in walmart. I think it was air conditioning foam or RV I can't remember which. But you can get a strip of it a couple inches wide and thick and feet long for like $10. I've had it around 5 years and haven't used half of it. It works perfectly. Just cut a little off as you need it.
