Stellan Bengtsson originally for me, because :-

- World Champion
- A year or so younger than me
- Left-handed
- Not another Chinese clone.
Ditto here! Also Stellan Bengtsson got me playing table tennis, especially he is indeed also left-handed.
Therefore, my love always goes out to all left-handed table tennis players
I started playing table tennis in 1975 and first saw him live in 1977 at the World Championships in Birmingham.

well, my dad was a coach, and he used to be one of the top players in former country, so he is probably the main reason I am playing as he took me with him to practice sessions and tournaments often, but still, we watched a lot of table tennis (besides F1 😂, strange family, I know) and it was always - Mikael Appelgren vs. Jorgen Persson vs. Jan Ove Waldner. and he was always comenting Waldner like - you see, how he moves, you see how he is always on the ball at the right time but it doesn't seem like he is moving, see? watch and learn! :D

later on Jorg Rosskopf joined the party and when I was knocking on the door of national team Timo Boll entered the chat and gave me hope that maybe European player can take on the Chinese ... at that time I had first encounters with Chinese players and really had some self-esteem problems when facing them, but Timo gave me hope, that maybe one day, if I work hard enough ...

The Ma Long undergoing knee surgery in the US. He described his change of attitude towards table tennis.

Prior to surgery he only wanted to win.

During recovery he realized table tennis is not just an obligation, it is his life. He missed tt so much that he enjoyed so much when he played the first match.

It went from competition to enjoyment, from a career to a passion.

I had to take 6 months off due to left knee cap wear (too much FH 🤣). I remember how much joy tt bring when i picked up my racket.

From then on I just enjoy tt as if I won't be able to play it tomorrow

Oh then kneecap. I had issues with that forehand about a month in January. Stairs, especially going down was difficult to say the least. As my class is the third level and have to take stairs, carrying my guitar made it hard on my knees.

My coach loves Waldner. He says "He's the GOAT". I love the way he plays, no questions asked. Close runner ups are Karakasevic, Kreanga, and Koki niwa. (All K's)
They inspire me!
Great players! Say, how did they inspire your style of play?

I stay close to the table/mid distance but never go super far. I enjoy chop blocks when I can and I typically dropshot ~5 times per game. I think its the most fun shot. I love ripping loops off of backspin and then controlling the rest of the rally (if it continues) through blocks and counters.

This should be an interesting topic. Getting to know what inspires people from different parts of the world!

For me, the first time I ever bought a somewhat expensive racket, it was a donic 900 with a picture of J.O Waldner on it, with his accolades written as well. So i got curious, who is this Waldner guy?
Now, mind you, I was born in 2001 and had never watched proper table tennis beforehand. So I never knew the who's who of the modern times and just started searching for Waldner on the internet. And immediately I was like "Oh my god! this is just a work of beauty!" Only to be bummed a little while after, because I found out he played in the 90's and I'm not going to see any new stuff from him:ROFLMAO:

Then, I got more into the modern stuff. This is the 13 y/o me looking for what's new and who's on top. And there are a few players that peeped my interest:
Zhang Jike- Fan Zhendong- Dima Ovtcharov- Samsonov- Mizutani- and of course, who can forget Ma Long!
I knew about ZJ being the olympic champ but I'd never watched a match from him. So I thought" the olympic finals eh? this must be the pinnacle of table tennis. Surely, there are lots of beautiful back-and-forth banger-after-banger type of shots. I gotta watch that for a start!" And again, only to be bummed after watching a one sided butt whooping(no disrespect to Wang Hao, the man in a legend. But c'mon that was one sided as hell)
And then came FZD. Oh.My.God. I had never seen anyone with such aggression play table tennis. To see a 16-17 y/o kid go against the one percent of the percent, how can you not be mesmerized? Such complete technique on both wings, never going on the defensive, and challenging the most high-quality shots produced by anyone. ML might be the greatest player ever, but FZD is hands-down the best in terms of his technique. I'm obviously no pro and never had proper coaching. So I just watched him for hours and hours to copy his style. I thought if I could somehow emulate his technique and add the brilliance of someone like a Waldner( obviously nowhere near as good as these guys, but you get the point), I'll be a force to be reckoned with in my local club, where I get to play a bunch of 40 year olds.

Then, you have your other pros. Guys who you know are not gonna amount to greatness like that, but it's still fun to route for them. That for me would be Mizutani, Samsonov and Ovtcharov.
Mizutani's lack of backhand+ his come from behind style of play, where he constantly has to lob and defend is surely capable of generating lots of highlights. Samsonov's ability to control and neutralize any threat with his presence all over the court, and the fact that he was so tall it was to his detriment made him so much more fun to watch. And then there's Dima. For some reason, a lot of people either dislike him or troll him any chance they get. And as EJ's we tended to make fun of him because he kept insisting on using donic equipment while we all knew he was using tenergy... And of course, sometimes he can be obnoxious with the grunt sounds that he makes. But my god is he the sweetest guy. He is by no means the best player in the world. But surely capable of going toe to toe with him. I route for Dima like I do Man United; I know it's gonna be a dissapointing experience, but I can't help it! He's just won over me.

That was my long story. What's yours?
I was casually playing a year before in office but had fully stopped. I recently played against a very very weak colleague and lost. Both of us didn't know any technique. I was quite surprised that I lost to her and for some reason soon I saw Andreas Levenko's yt channel and his explanations. I hadn't know about the various chinese coach tled videos back then and this youtube channel was no nonsense and I liked it very much. So got preassembled racket and now learning techniques.

I like many players more than levenko, like Fan Zhendong or zjk or anders lind but levenko probably got me restart tt

While reading Everything Robotics by Jennifer Swanson (National Geographic children's book) around 2023 summer, I learned Timo Boll defeated the KUKA AR Agilus (world's fastest robot) in an intense 11-9 game at China, so I thought Timo was the craziest player ever and easily dominated table tennis. This thought was BEFORE I started playing table tennis, especially before becoming somewhat serious as a hobby paddler.
After the summer, I looked up to Ma Long, due to his dominance and status as the Greatest of All Time. I tried to imitate his techniques when I started playing table tennis. I also liked Felix Lebrun for his athleticism.

Adam Bobrow and TTD Dan, they are my inspiration to start playing TT and they showed me that playing TT is fun.
Seriously, I started playing after watching them and right off the bat I bought a FZD Alc with D05 on both sides 😅. And now its been 2 and half years of taken coaching and I'm playing at an intermediate level.
Once started playing then I started following WTT tours and inspired by many players
  • Dima
  • FZD
  • Ma Long
  • M Maze
