Not so shocked really. He is good and by beating the no:1 Chinese he got a mental boost. This sport is more mental than what one could imagine. You could see at the end while he wasn’t giving up he knew he had lost, that’s why he snaked FZD. He may be the player with the strongest mentality right now.

Cheers

I definitely agree on this. We had a mini tournament in our office and when I beat last years' champ (I rarely beat him during regular matchplay) during the elimination round I have experienced extreme confidence andon the succeeding matches I felt so loose that almost all of my setups are working. Not sure if beating WCQ was just a fluke but Truls definitely was able to pull it off somehow and it gave him too much confidence which showed in one of the sets he had with Hugo, he was down 4-10 and was able to come back and win the set. That was so feaking satisfying for sure and at the same time puts so much pressure on his opponent.

It really came down to the mental game. He was able to maintain top form, while higher seeds WCQ and Calderano couldn't. Assar and Cheng are players he should beat, the advantage of unseating the #1 seed and getting his draw.

He's been down (results wise)for a while now but the blocks of his game were always there.
I think Truls responded amazingly to the Olympic atmosphere, it lifted him while many felt it's weight. And so he put his game together consistently for a week and performed incredibly!

It seemed to me like Truls was often able to disturb his opponents' confidence by giving them a strange, uncomfortable ball (chop block, sidespin, etc) every now and then. Lots of spin variation, and most modern high-level players don't play with that much spin variation.
That chop-block with sidespin is a menace but FZD came in prepared. This proves CNT players are just built diff. DOn't know what happened to WCQ though.

I have seen Truls' petty trick shot work on lesser mortals, but against the titans of TT, the likes of ML and FZD especially when FZD gets into Beast Mode / Avatar state, all those petty trick shots melts away.

He did land a snake in today's match, though :p

So Truls shocked the world again playing in men's singles final. Why he played so well? Did he bring something new to his game? Or what? He didn't use his main weapons earlier so he can suprise in olympics?

He's been capable of playing at this level and showed it at points as recent as early this year. I remember in January during the ETTU Top 16 he was looking absolutely unbeatable on his way to the finals. He eventually lost to Jorgic in a really flat performance, but the way he steamrolled Ovtcharov and Alexis made some of us think he turned a corner after competing in China's super league.

Especially pay attention to that 5th game against Alexis. One of the best performances to close out a single game I've seen all year from a player. Check out Felix's reaction while watching in the audience haha

I think he would have had a real chance vs fan if he had won the 2nd and 3rd set. Both were really close and maybe 1-2 net balls and another good situation could habe made the trick...
I recall hearing some commentator saying that you need every single point/luck you can get.
I think what you said is just that
that 1 extra point, would have made a huge difference.
