That pattern is commonly called "fish scales". It's a kind of figuring that might appear when the koto plank is quartersawn and is completely normal, although relatively rare.
It does not affect the performance/characteristics of the wood itself.
Many people find it attractive and/or desirable: some are even willing to spend more for that kind of figuring.
Hope this was helpful.

Just a small warning from my own personal experience with a 75 Inner with that sort of fishscale pattern. I didn't seal the blade thinking the hardness of koto would keep me safe. But it splintered very slightly on my first rubber change. The splintering happened along the vertical axis or the grain.

I'd recommend you seal the blade or at least be very careful to pull rubber completely perpendicular to the grain.

People value all kinds of idiotic things, why should I care about it?
You asked what it was... Zeio (and I) replied with more or less detailed explanations...
Why would you attack someone honestly answering a question you seemed to be worried about?

Because it's made in China by a Chinese brand and produced primarily for that market, which is why they cut the log that way in the first place.

O
I was responding to the overall consensus in this thread to seal my blade in order to take care of the perceived value of it, against what I wished to do with it. Dont be so easily offended -- I didnt even refer to you.
ooooh
Another ingrate.
You cared enough to take photos and post in here asking about it.
Then you give a snark to someone who took the time to give you some information with another snarky response when someone points it out to you.
The only person who seems offended is you for the fact that people chose to engage with you.
Not rational behavior by any standards

You were responding to the overall consensus on something that wasn't asked by quoting a person that directly answered your OP and being aggressive towards them?

It's a very interesting stance.
