Kazuki Hamada and Kaho Akae are top seeds in MS and WS. In addition to Kaho, a number of Japanese women are playing here: Kyoka Idesawa, Asuka Sasao, Kasumi Kimura, Reina Aso, and Rin Mende.

Guaranteed only one Japanese in the finals of WS as all of the strongest ones are in the top half. Kaho takes out Asuka. She will meet Kyoka who took out Nina Mittelham. In the bottom half, Margaryta Pesotska took out Reina Aso, and Kim Seongjin took out Kasumi Kimura.

Flashback to the 2017 Bulgaria Open, one of the last tournaments that still used separation by association before it was scrapped, where the Japan Women’s National Team occupied all sixteen spots in the Round of 16.

"History was made at the Seamaster 2017 ITTF World Tour Asarel Bulgaria Open on Thursday 17th August as Japan prevailed in each of the Women's Singles Round of 32 encounters in Panagyurishte, becoming the first country to achieve the feat since the formation of the ITTF World Tour in 1996. The Seamaster 2017 Asarel Bulgaria Open is the 320th ITTF World Tour event."

The men's final was fascinating, it is a reminder of the quality of player struggling to make the national team in France. You could also say something similar about Akae and Japan.
