Yeah, that's a common problem in the world of table tennis and sports in general. I think It's ok that a parent wants his son to be the best, but definitely not critiscising him as it can drastically put him down or even make him stop doing what he likes. I just hope it won't make Zhang stop playing table tennis and he'll still improve his skills more and more.

Won the world championships, the Olympics and the World cup but hasn't won his father's heart just yet.
Very sad.

I think ZJK is suffering these losses because of great highs from winning the Olympics and Worlds and now is possibly struggling to find motivation to win as the smaller tournaments mean alot less to him now as he knows he has already beaten the best on the most prestigious stage. His father is right in saying it is a battle with himself rather than his opponents and that he may need help from others, but he should not be too angry, and I'm sure he is proud of his son's achievements.

On another note I would not be suprised if ZJK poor form continues for a while longer, but a good test for him will be to see if he gets his fight back for the world champs. But I'm sure in time ZJK will be playing well again.

Which is why players like Roger Federer are so great, or even Waldner - won everything, and had that insatiable desire and hunger to continue working hard to stay at the top.

i don't think he will play good in WTTC because he didn't play good in trails . he said:"i don't feel no pressure to defend my title in Paris" and without pressure there is no motivation to play hard. without any pressure the match seems like a exhibition match and you will not have any motivation.

There is always pressure in professional sport, even when the leader is miles ahead of the rest of the competition, which, when looking at ZJK never was the case (i.e miles ahead of his team mates). He never really was miles ahead of everyone else, or arguably even the best, in the Chinese team.

he played pretty good against wang hao in trials...but i think zhang jike had so much lucky to be a grand slam...in Olympics he had the luck to not face againts timo boll how beaten him in team events. in the world cup ovtcharov was so close to win against him. in the WTTC if ma long can beaten wang hao maybe now he was the grand slam. but ok every champ has is luck.

I think the problem with zhang jike is that they expect him to be some sort of machine who is always at his peak and never loses a point.
the guy doesn't seem to be like that.
he seems the type of guy who can beat anybody when in the zone but who can be beaten by anybody in a random day.
this seems to be what drives liuguoliang and father crazy.
cause liu guoliang wants to go and say to the world "he's the best player in the history of time, he's an unbeatable machine!!!"
and when he does zhang jike goes and loses against some random player putting him in shame.
and then when liu guoliang says "he sucks really bad, I'm gonna throw him out of the team!" zhang jike goes and wins world championship.
so fun to watch ;)

yeh good point alborz, i hope he does play well be interesting to see how he goes when he comes up against a top european player, maybe he means no pressure to defend it but there is still natural pressures of other kind nerves etc
