I can't answer about the Thug Life question. But here is what Urban Dictionary says:

"Thug Life A word Evolved by the late Tupac Shakur. Commonly mistaken for a Criminal. Thug Life is the opposite of someone having all he needs to succeed. Thug life is when you have nothing, and succeed, when you have overcome all obstacles to reach your aim.
"When my heart beats, it screams THUG LIFE."...."

Wikipedia says Thug Life was a group that Tupac was in with 5 other people.

It sounds like people who like the term are coopting the video, which I think is okay.

As far as why the video is so popular, the shot is pretty good, but I think it may also have to do with the reactions after. The reactions after really let a viewer who does not know as much about table tennis know that the shot is really pretty impressive. The reactions really are pretty funny.

And if guys acted like that after a real point in an ITTF event, so many people on the forums would complain about bad form. But normal people really seem to like that. So the reactions of both players helped this video be so popular. I think that is pretty okay.
