Hi, since i didn't do anything for my birthday yesterday, i decided to buy a new blade! :)
I am currently using a viscaria, but am interested in the Mizutani Super ZLC blade. Could any of you please tell me how the viscaria compares to the MJ SZLC in terms of speed, spin/dwell time, control, feel, far, close, and mid distance from the table. Also, how do they perform in terms of blocking, looping, driving, serves, and counterlooping?

Much appreciated.

First of all happy birthday(even if its late)

I suggest you watch dans review of both blades since he pretty much covers every aspect you asked for.

I can only share my experiences with the mj szlc since I only own that. However it is great in all categories but a little on the faster side of blades so your controll needs to be on point.
What rubbers are you going to use?(i play it with the h3 neo)

Here, let's see if I can make this useful:

1st, if you have a Viscaria, you probably don't "need" any other blade. It is an awesome blade.

2nd, it's your birthday or Xmas or whatever holiday you want it to be for. If you want it, go for it! Have fun doing a little EJing.

If you like having fun trying different equipment, try away. At some point your wallet may take issue with you. But if you can afford this and it makes you happy, no reason to worry about it.

If money is an issue, you already have one of the best blades Butterfly has ever designed.

Top ply of Viscaria = Koto, which is crisp and on the hard side and good for highly skilled players who have excellent technique. For players who already know how to hold the ball on the blade face to get massive spin.

Top ply of MJ SZLC = Limba, which is softer, slower, has better dwell time and makes it easier to generate spin. However the SZLC makes this blade fast despite the top ply being softer and less crisp.

Neither of these blades are the best for someone trying to develop more spin and better technique. But if the technique is there, they are pretty great.

Personally, if I was going for a MJ blade, I would actually go for the MJ ZLC not the SZLC. The regular is more than enough juice. The ZLC should be very comparable in speed to the Viscaria with a slightly softer feel. Whereas the SZLC should be faster and, as you get further from the table, a little harder to control than the ZLC or the Viscaria.

What is your level America? How long have you been playing? How well do you loop vs backspin?

The answers to those questions would help to determine how well suited either blade would be for your development. But may have nothing to do with what you want or what will make you happy which can also be important factors.

nice sum Carl, and i agree.

but when i held the super during my visit to japan, and compare it side by side with the zlc, it's love at the first sight. the zlc is good on its own, but pale in comparison being side by side with the super and i just couldn't leave the store without it...

so, either just get the zlc and don't compare it with the super, or just get the super already and be done with...

Hahaha. Your post may need some context. Post a photo of a small portion of your vast collection! Hehe.

I gave the MJ SZLC a spin for a couple of months. Some things I liked about it over the Viscaria were the over all feeling when hitting, driving and net play. Looping felt better than Visc, but I found myself having to hold back due to its shear speed. Who wants to loop with only 30-40% of their power??? Not me. IMO, the blade is best suited for hitters, blockers, or those who consistently loop 3 steps off the table. There was a coolness factor in owning a Super ZLC, but I am not sure how to equate that into a rating system. Needless to say, I sold the SZLC and kept the Viscaria.

**Edit** I was just looking over my notes taken during the time period of owning the MJ. It started out with strong hateful words, "couldn't loop worth a ___!! Total waste of money!!!" In subsequent weeks, I had changed the rubber from Tenergy 05/80 to T05fx and that made a world of difference in my spin oriented game. Although the top ply is soft, the overall feeling is stiff, unless loop driving, then I'd feel a little flex. The change in rubber added just the bit of dwell that I was needing to get decent loops back in my game. Then I noted,"Loops and counterloops rolled off the rubber at a medium high arc, falling just short of the baseline using 60% of my power. Correct contact made a pleasant "click" sound. Blocks really well. Can add pace rather easily to keep the opponent guessing."

Maaaan... I resisted posting one since I already posted the super on another thread.

But here, found another for you. Side by side of zlc with szlc. [emoji12]
