this is me playing last week.

i'm not happy at all about my performance. I think i played at my average or slightly below my average. I wasn't in very good physical form but I was fighting. Obviously I'm very nervous, and serve/receive is particularly bad compared to usual. Also, I realize i still cannot correct what i think is my major problem: my upper body is too upright. I KNOW i have to do something about it, but there is no progress at all. I would also like to use counter on wide FH more often than just blocking. I've taken bad habits recently (I used to use counter more often)

The other guy is performing well. But I would like to be able to beat this kind of guys whatever it takes even on a bad day.
You might be the better player but I wouldn't know watching the match. He seemed to know what he was doing and I never got the impression that you were in control. I don't know what about your game gives you this idea that serving long serves at tight points is a good idea but if you want to do that, you had better have much faster and higher quality serves as such serves get worse when you are not the one ahead. IF you serve long you need to step back to loop (like your opponent did) but you stayed at the table and were surprised when the ball came back.

Other than that, your game has too little spin. IT makes more winners and errors but doesn't let the opponent make errors. I think that is the main thing you should take away from Der Echte - you take too much risk with how you play because your game relies too much on timing and too little on technique because it is so flat. You need to engage your wrist more on all your shots.

well I can only agree, its a horrible performance, and I agree with all you say NL and Der Echte.

I hope this sets a lower benchmark for my performance and i can send better stuff. but thats how i played so I have to be honest.

Der_Echte has pretty much said everything that needs to be said ... .I was excited about getting 7 points against that 2500 level chopper in the third game ...... just shows that no matter the level of the opponent you can still adapt from one game to the next ... never give up !

So we had a hell of a table tennis weekend , especially because Der_Echte was in town and we had a lot of plan discussing , dissecting and watching table tennis ... not to mention the matches we played ... it was a lot of fun to watch Timo take it to the Chinese with live commentary from der_echte ...

Had a session with Der_Echte where we made some video recordings to analyze my apparent lack of consistency very heavy push in singles ... things that I took away to work on immediately , from all the advise Der_echte gave me

1. Sometimes I am serving the short heavy serve too fast for my own good ...
2. Need to keep my knees bent all the time for better footwork
3. Try to be as close to the table as possible at all times during the game ...

Now coming back to the matches, yes our doubles performance was special. They won the first 2 games easily and we came back to win 3-2 ... and actually was 5-0 up at the interchange and 10-4 up when serving for the match ! ... it was a pity our best player was tired from tired from group training otherwise there was a chance we could have gotten them ... anyways , the good thing about table tennis is that you learn a lot when you lose and this weekend I learnt a lot about my game and that of the team ... :)

Just got back from a weekend of league as an out of town trouble maker...

We lost our team vs team matchus, but we fought and fought... without or top players.

I lost a singles match 8-10 a better player in 5th set on Sat.

Today, I lost a singles match 1-3 vs a player prolly 3-4 levels better than me, but I fought out a great set to get one. This match would decide which team wins. Lots of hard fought rallies in 3rd game, nothing was dry on me, I was a dripping sweat form of humanity.

What was remarkable was our doubles performance. Due to an acute shortage of players, TT Monster played a singles (vs a player 6 levels better and achieved 7 points in a game) and Monster also teamed up with the team's default doubles player... some trouble maker named Der_Echte. (at least the days he shows up)

We teamed up vs a very unconventional player who nearly won vs our no 1 player, other player was the ex-2300 level player I lost to in singles. We prompty lost the first two games. All opponents did was push ball on return and smash a loose ball if we gave it to them. We pissed away points on serve receive and my oddly poor BH attacking. We vowed in game 3 to correct those two areas and be more consistent. We did.

As game 3 went on, we got more consistent, stop giving away points, and made them work. We also landed better quality attacks. Game 4 I grumbled to go HEAVY on 3rd ball or 4th ball if I could push and get a push back. Monster went full heavy hardly missing any attacks. He baited the other team no 1 to attack to where I was ready to fast block for winner. I also baited the weaker player to go for cross court BH corner when I was parked in FH corner.. I did 2-3 3-4 meter reverse cross-over step quickly to get to ball and pound it BH for winners... all without a visible stroke.

Basically, Monster got real solid as match went on and didn't give up. He was big-time consistent later and steady.

We didn't win the matchup, but we took a match from them to give us a chance to be there. Doubles was epic today. We made the coach of that team want to crap in his shorts.... after we went up 5-0 in game 5 at changeover.

REAL important was to bend knees a bit right before opponent impacts ball... allows for quick lateral or forward movement. Done subconsciously. Makes all your shots easy. You finish on balance.

Maintain proper distance from table. Very difficult to loop underpin effectively 2 feet or more off table.

Whip, leverage, power transfer and grip pressure at impact crucial... loose for heavy slow loop vs underpin. Relaxed muscles.

Sir,

First, thank you for sharing video of your play.

2nd, you are a few levels higher than me. Take this FWIW... I apologize in advance if this was not the case... it seemed to me you let your performance as well as your partner's chos affect you. You seemed to rush into each point, while not calming yourself down after loss. Take a few seconds extra to clear your head and 'reset'. Don't dwell on the previous point. Look at the current point as a start. Win or lose, your partner seemed to take a few seconds extra doing little things to calm himself down and prepare for the next point.

I vaguely recall in the past discussions you mentioning your nerves getting to you at times. Take a breath for a count of 4, hold it for a count of 4, exhale for a count of 4, hold breath for a count of 4. Repeat the cycle. Actively focus your thoughts on the breathing and holding of breath. Clear your mind.

Hope this helps!

~osph

edit: i'm guilty of NOT relaxing as i play... i rush between points as well as during the point. i know the feeling all too well. i see some of that in your play.

i am actively trying to relax and slow down. Also trying to play to return the ball instead of kill the ball for a winner. Given my age and lack of speed/stamina, i've found that i rush myself. Truly hope this helps!

Dude, are U serious? As much as I WANT to go to NA Teams, my move to California has cost me $75,000 out of pocket and it is rising. I just paid a CITY property tax bill not included in my house payment that is 1.75 times my monthly take home pay. This cat is outta cash... and the expenses related to this move will not end for another year. Then I had to shyt 6 figures for a down payment. Dude, I have been accused of having ample room there, but after I extracted that figure from my hind end, there is plenty of room for Der_Echte to be full of crap.

However, I fully intend to be at Dec 2017 US Open, since I will kinda be in the area the week prior.

If everything works out, maybe this winter I can get to your state's capitol for a week on someone else's dime. It is a few hours away, but you would be willing to get over there for a special collaboration interne special that will be epic and lasting, right?

@Next Level Getting back to the rubber, since you can produce force well enough... you are a candidate for a rubber with control and possible spin production. That is why Karis was great for you, but a Tibhar substitute should be Genius, a variant of Aurus, or the Donic Barracuda you are proposing. I am back to KJH with M+ both sides, playing my best TT ever... and I am about as old, heavy, and hip injured as ever.

In other local news, TTD all knows I drive 3 hours to play on TT-Monster's league team (Swan Ping Pong Club CLC League) occasionally when I can get there. http://www.swanpingpong.com/2017clc/index.html

I show up to his club, claim that I am an "Out of Town Trouble Maker" play hard, sometimes bring my Brew equipment and make free cappuccinos, or just goof around (and play defense).

This is the last few weeks of league of 28 teams, we slipped in ranking and are around the drop zone for advancing, so we gotta get hard and get to trouble making winning ways.

In the spirit of this, I ordered team jerseys, which I hope the post will get to me in time to give to everyone in time for Sunday's epic vs GOOGLE HEADQUARTERS. Yes, the actual world-evil Google. (Evil to us who must fight them)

When they see us walk in wearing BATTLE RED Nexy Pavis Jerseys, they will know trouble just walked into their house !!

C'mon TTD, I wanna hear a DAILY CHEER to defeat the mighty Google team !!!

I am gunna build this one up on TTD, hopefully some bloke other than me can take decent pics to upload for this epic clash !!

I am geriatric these days, have lost more points than you did since you moved initially.

Coming for the teams?

I am also geriatric (hip tear) (heavy) (other things I can be accused of) and lost points, but level didn't really drop. It DID take a dip 5-6 months in for a few months spell, but I am at my best competitive playing level now, hopefully can carry it to US Open.

Yesterday best match of us I can remember!
Very tight, very close, intensive with so many great matches!
We play best of 18 (so 9:9 is a tie) and we were down 5:7, then 7:7 and down 7:8 to finally win 10:8 ! :)
Very cool and we were happy to win.
Despite of me keeping my 25%, only winning one single match.. (the last one at 9:8).
I have it all recorded and I am happy to have it, was very good :)
I will post videos if you guys are interrested ;)

Hit for 90 mins or so straight last night. Was a little gassed out. Hit with 2 partners, the 2nd partner was very challenging. My first time hitting with him. During my summer break, he must've joined. Young guy, SH, likes to play away from table. Lobs, wicked sidespin loops, chops, etc. Normally i like playing that type of partner as I'm generally close to the table attacker.

He's consistent, probably 1 or 2 levels above me. But he was fine with me going almost all out on each shot... meaning i didn't restrain my strokes when hitting I generally have an eye of just returning the ball and just hitting steady.

I am at a level that I cannot consistently control my loop yet, so i let it whip on his chops. Partner was fine with that. Made some, missed some, but felt good to 'unleash'. Hit both SH and PH and mostly FH's. Smashed some, looped some. Had fun.Tried to loop some high balls... lol at me... need to get to the ball earlier on the bounce or just smash.

Not quite ready to go to TT 2x a wk... also have parents teachers conferences tonight regardless. Next week may try for 2x a week TT.
