Should you curl fingers at back of bat when using jpen/Japanese penhold RPB??

Do you have a hybrid bat that allows for rpb? Traditional jpen blades don't work for rpb, right?
its actually a lot common know for Jpen blades to support 2 rubbers
you also have those Jpen head, but Cpen like body for 2 rubbers
I even saw Jpen + cybershape
I guess, anything is possible

Yeah I have seen those hybrid blades with a round head and cork handle. I used to play with a cork mounted to a cpen too, wasn't bad.

Does this work with classic jpen shape too?

To me playing jpen now is almost like driving a vintage car or fishing a bamboo fly rod. You can have solid performance (up to like 2000 level every style can win if it is well enough executed) but it is more for the enjoyment rather than maximum performance.

I also have a jpen blade and love hitting forehands with it but usually play with my cpen because I enjoy rpb a lot.

sadly jpen is dying in asia
cpen is dying too, jpen is just closer.

Its only the older players (previous generations) that still use it.
20 years and younger today, hardly any....

They should have penholder only events at tournaments here in the USA like they do with Hardbat. That would be fun!

"The report of penhold's death was an exaggeration."

Well
From my eyes to typing here.
Until my eyes sees otherwise, penhold is disappearing.
So many teams don’t have a single penholder

I am cpen. I use the slightly curled grip at the back. Feels better to put spin on the ball .
Straight fingers are suppose to be better for forehand. Plus curled fingers gives more surface area to hit the ball.

says former JPEN, now CPEN
use whatever grip that is comfortable to you in the moment

i myself dont have a "fixed" grip per say, sometimes my fingers are curled, sometimes they're a bit straight, sometimes i hold the blade deeper and sometimes more shallow

even ryu seung-min mentioned that his grip is slightly differrent each time he holds it in a video, its just part of penhold

Agree. You can do either curled fingers or straight fingers. But in the course of developing your forehand and backhand, the fingers in the back can move between straight or curled or maybe even hybrid of both. Everyone plays differently.

Side topic. I used to play Jpen. And I had an ox (without sponge) long pips on the backhand so I can chop the ball back when I was too far away from the table. With that set up, by having long pips in the back, 1) it actually makes it easier to grip the blade (When I did Cpen with RPB with smooth rubbers on the back, it was really hard to grip the blade sometimes when you sweat a lot in the middle of a match), 2) it does not add much if any weight to the blade (the whole point of Jpen is NOT to do RPB. Jpen, with one side only, should be light weight and give you more ability to use your wrist and make your short game better, 3) you can pull out the long pips to confuse your opponent here and there.

Nowadays I play shakehand. But I still have some Cpen and Jpen rackets that I have set up to fool around here and there. One Cpen set up has hurricane on the forehand and short pips on the backhand side. I find that set up to be kind of fun. First of all, short pips are lighter in weight than inverted rubber so the set up is light (again, the whole point of penhold is that the set up should be light and you can use wrist more). Second, the short pips helps me grip the Cpen better. Third, I get to do RPB with short pips which confuse the hell out of all my clubmates!!
