Hi all, inspired by the cool stuff I've seen being made on here I decided to try my hand at making a couple of blades. All I can say is it's kind of addictive and so many combinations to try out :D My son is actually using one of my first ones (as a beginner at 8 years old) and likes the fact that it was made for him. I'm lucky to have access to a couple of clubs that have extremely strong players for feedback too, especially as I've not played more than a few times in more than 20 years (but plan to get back into it in the new year!).

These two are my #10 and #11. From feedback on my 5/7 ply all-wood blades having "great feeling but too slow" these are my 3rd and 4th attempt at using carbon fibre and most successful to date. They are both a little on the heavy side (deliberately) - I generally go for much lighter (balsa cored) blades in the 75-80g range. These are both a little larger than I generally go for too as I personally have always liked super compact, as fast as possible blades.

#10: Hinoki / Ayous / CF / Kiri Core

Always wanted to try out the "tenaly" handle and the Cybershape so thought I'd combine them haha. I'm left-handed hence the text on the "wrong" side. Will be interesting to get some rubbers on this and try it out. My son made me add the Pokeball to the handle but this will definitely be way too much for him to handle as a beginner.

#11 - Koto / Douglas Fir / CF / Kiri Core

Bit more traditional than the last - I think this turned out really nicely and the "scaled" koto looks really nice albeit it is a proper pain in the neck to work with compared to hinoki / cypress or even walnut and purpleheart that I've used on earlier blades. The handle is Sapele which is my favourite wood to work with for both this and guitar building that is my main "thing". Again this is definitely on the heavy and fast side and was built with someone specifically in mind who was interested a similar (but slower) earlier effort.

A little bit stiff (I guess) and heavy else looking great.

Cheers

The heaviness as I say is deliberate - theses blades have a slightly thicker core than I’ve used previously. Previous builds range from 70g to 85g :D Pretty much all the advanced level players I’ve let try these said they prefer blades in the 90g ish range. I guess the lighter weights are for us mere mortals.

Wrt: stiffness, again that is my general preference - the blade I used before I stopped playing for a couple of decades was a TSP balsa offensive 8.5 which is pretty stiff and silly fast. Back in the day I was speed gluing max thickness rubbers on that thing haha.

Have a few more conventionally weighted blades in the pipeline anyway.

The seconds layer of your 1st blade isn't ayous, it is koto!

Which CF do you use (weight / m2)?

Edit: I could be wrong as ayous has those 45° lines and maybe the little holes make it look like the fishers net of koto?!

Definitely Ayous xD Had quite a large supply of it that I've now used up. I've used 200gsm for these - that's a bit heavy though, would use 90 by preference if I do this again although it's a fair bit more expensive.

85 g for the blade and a total weight of 185 is ideal for me. It should be slow and not too stiff. The power should be from the player not from the equipment. Anyway nice work…

Quick update as I was reassembling my 8 year old's bat in preparation for a training session later - this was my second attempt at making a blade - all wood construction and super compact shape (148mm x 151mm). It's not especially light which is not surprising as it's 7-ply but it has super lightweight rubbers (AK47) so the overall weight is on the low side and works out pretty much the same as his other / original blade. This one is not fast at all - I'd put it at around ALL+ speed, I'm guessing due to the slightly thinner balsa in the core, and has decent feel to me.

Construction is 7-ply: Douglas Fir - Purpleheart - Ayous - Balsa (Core) using "normal" wood glue. Weight is 86g and the balance is a way down so it's quite headlight and doesn't feel that heavy. The handle is Limba - Sapele - Rosewood and Conic, which is the best shape and was my preference when I was playing seriously (30 years ago!). I *really* like this octagonal profile and prefer it to the normal rounded one - people I've let try these are either ambivalent or don't notice xD

I got around to putting rubber on the #11 blade - Xiom Vega Pro / Omega IV Pro and total weight comes out at 190g which is chonky for what I usually use but not a million miles from what you were saying above. Looking forward to actually trying it out at the club. Feel's really solid from a quick hit at home - time will tell if the weight is too much for me though xD

Edit: My 2 usual setups are 176g and 178g so this is a fair bit different!

It works for me, under 180 is difficult to achieve considering modern rubbers weight.

Just finishing up another blade which I'll probably end up using myself albeit it's a little on the heavy side but we'll see - seems to be quite nicely balanced so maybe it won't be a complete pig :D

I'm actually inclined to just use Hinoki / Cypress outer blades from now on due to the amazing smell.

#12 - Hinoki / Hinoki / CF / Kiri Core

Loved the feeling of Hinoki on #10 so thought I'd go with two layers this time (actually I ran out of Ayous but shhh...). It's quite a thick and weighty beast with the core being a hair under 3.5mm and overall thickness at 7.2mm. I think that because my last few blades have had a longer handle @ 110mm, that's contributing to the overall weight also. Decided to try using SpectraPly for the handles. This is pretty heavy stuff being essentially dyed birch ply. I've had to hollow out the handles to keep the weight anything like sensible. I think it looks quite pretty though. Will be trying this out at the club in the next day or so - suspect it might be a little bit lively but we'll see xD

Got to try the latest blade with the blue handle out "in anger" today at the club - this thing is fantastic and is definitely my new main blade xD It's incredibly powerful, probably due to the weight, but I'm finding it pretty manageable so far. I installed some Rasanter I had lying around (47 black on forehand, 42 red on backhand) and it's fast but not overwhelmingly so. These rubbers are way more "catapulty" than the Vega Pro / Omega Pro combination I've been using on my #11 blade from above which I'd reckon is around the same speed and the feel is WAY different. With the Vega / Omega combination I feel like the control is off the charts - I'm able to just block any level of topspin / sidespin and place the ball exactly where I want with no effort at all. With the Rasanter it's a bit more challenging but holy cow, power loops / drives are ridiculously overpowered from either side. The overall setup with the Rasanter is 197g which is a bit on the heavy side (to say the least...) but because of the longer handle (110mm) the balance is good - it doesn't feel that head heavy.

I used Danish oil on the handle since those pics were taken and the colour "popped" - a really deep turquoise which is very pretty. I'm super happy with this one - had someone wanting to buy it already so I might have to make another :D

This whole blade building business is way too addictive haha.
