I've heard that speedglue works well as a sealant. I had some leftover Whale 2 around the house, so I decided to try it out as a sealant.

I put a thin layer of it on my Inner 75. After drying, it does seem to provide some kind of protection. But after I glue a rubber on and take it off, I don't know if the sealant will stay stuck on.

Does anybody else do this? and Does the speedglue stay on?

My belief is that people only feel that VOC glues 'protect' their blade because it doesn't make as strong a bond with the wood as a water based glue do and therefore is less likely to remove splinters of your blade when removing the rubbers.
So it's protection for the blade in the form of a weaker bond rather than anything in the VOC that actually acts like a sealant or wood protector.
The VOC glues dry as a thin rubber layer, as the water glues do. So if there isn't a thin layer of rubber on the blade when you remove the rubbers then you can see there isn't any vic to protect the blade.

Also, I would fully expect the VOC to dry out the wood over time (as water based glues will also).
If you only use VOC glue which is less adhesive than the water based glues then it may not be a problem and the weaker bond may not ever damage your blade.
But if you eventually use a stronger water based glue to stick your rubbers then I think you'll have trouble with splintering.

Even some manufacturers seal blades at the factory now so sealing with a thin layer of polyurethane is the best bet.

My question is,.if your interested to protect your blade, why would you just not seal it?

Do you think a thin layer of polyurethane is noticable and diminishes your playing level?

I agree sealant is the best. In my case I just happened to have speed glue lying around, so I thought I might as well try it out.

None of my blades are actually splintering.

I usually use Elmer's rubber cement as glue. Not sure if that is stronger or weaker than water glue

Sealant is something, almost-permanent. You cannot describe VOC-glue as sealant, it will be removed along with the rubber. So, NO you cannot use VOC/speed glue as sealant. You use it ONLY to avoid the water in the water glue as a temporary solution if your blade is not sealed.

Also what is the reason to create a new thread? See here:

An moderator should merge all these threads into one. There is no reason for 3 topics about the same issue. @UpSideDownCarl

Good call!
I wonder where so many people got this same idea at the same time, did everyone watch the same video? 😂
